  2. What is a Biome? • A biome is group of ecosystems with similar climates, soil types, and organisms • All the biomes make up the Earth's biosphere.

  5. Taiga (boreal forest) • Canada, Russia, Alaska • Short warm, wet summers; long cold dry winters • Coniferous Forests • Typical animals include foxes, moose, bears, and chipmunks

  6. Tundra • Coldest of all biomes • Extremely short growing seasons (6 to 10 weeks) • Permafrost: Thin nutrient- poor soil • Long, cold, dark winters (6 to 10 months) • Low Precipitation • Snow provides insulation • Wildlife includes birds, reindeer, foxes, bears, seals, and walruses, caribou, wolves, and polar bears

  7. Temperate Terrestrial Biomes • Grassland • Forest • Desert • 30 to 50 degree latitude • 4 seasons • Cooler than tropical • Pennsylvania is located in this biome

  8. Temperate Grassland • Prairies in Central North America and the Steppes in N. Asia • Temperatures vary summer to winter • Moderate rain fall • Thick, nutrient-rich soil • Seasonal drought and occasional fires • Typical animal life includes jack rabbits, deer, foxes, coyotes, birds, and many other species

  9. Temperate Forest • PA in this biome • Covers 1/3 of the Earth’s area • Dominated by trees and woody vegetation (Deciduous Trees) • Precipitation is distributed evenly throughout the year • Animal life includes many things such as bears, deer,and rodents

  10. Temperate Desert • Deserts of Utah and Montana • Super-dry air • High daytime temperatures • Lots of wind • Typical animals include insects, reptiles, birds, and various mammals

  11. Tropical Terrestrial Biomes • Found near the equator • Hotter than other biomes • 2 seasons • Savanna • Tropical Desert • Rain Forest

  12. Savanna • Africa • Warm, hot climates • Thin nutrient-poor soil • Dry and rainy seasons • Seasonal fires help maintain balance • The Savannah is home to various large carnivores: lions, wildebeests, elephants, and zebra

  13. Tropical Desert • Mojave, Sonoran in North America and the Sahara in Africa • Hot and dry; long summers, short winters • Super-dry air • High daytime temperatures • Few things live here • Small shrubs, cacti, insects, snakes, and small rodents

  14. Rain Forest • Warm; very wet • Thick nutrient- poor acidic soil • Near the equator • More rain than any other biome • Millions of species live here.

  15. Aquatic Ecosystems • Water covers nearly 75% of the Earth’s surface • There are numerous species of plants and animals who live here. • These range in size from microscopic organisms to the size of a 100 ft whale. • Oceans, marshes, wetlands, rivers, lakes
