5. Let’s try it this way. • The average (or mean) of data is computed by • 1. Adding all the data together (sum). • 2. Dividing that sum by the number of data. • 5 + 10 + 2 + 7 = 24 • 24 ÷ 4 = 6 • So the average number of rocks collected was 6.

6. Here’s another example. • 3 + 2 + 10 + 6 + 4 =25 • 25 ÷ 5 = 5 • So the average number of fish owned by members of the Aqua club was 5.

7. You can find the average of your test grades. • 90 + 85 + 82 + 100 + 100 + 86 = 543 • 543 ÷ 6 = 90.5 • So the average of Sam’s spelling grades is 90.5 which is rounded up to 91 which is an A.

8. Find the average of this data. The average rainfall during these three weeks was 4 inches.

9. Find the average of this data. The average number of CDs owned by the members of the Hip Hop Club’s members is 20.

10. Find the average of this data. There is an average of 15 of each genre in the classroom library.

11. Find the average of this data. Mr. Postman has an average of 9.5 of each kind of tie.
