  2. Chuck Smith • In 1965, Chuck Smith broke from the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel • Smith claimed he received a prophecy from God, telling him to change his name to “Shepard” and begin a new church

Beliefs • Acknowledge monotheistic belief of the Trinity as one God • Acknowledge the truth held within the Bible, especially the King James version • Acknowledge Jesus’ virgin birth, and that his sacrifice is enough to bring everyone on Earth to salvation • Believe that some people are given spiritual gifts by the holy spirit, particularly the gift of tongues • Baptism is not necessary for salvation, but is rather an outward sign of inward change • Sacraments are sacred and blessed by God, and Communion is symbolic of the Last Supper

  4. Salvation • To reach eternity with God, you must live a holy life and repent to receive God’s grace • There is a literal Hell and a literal Heaven • A Rapture will occur at Jesus’ second coming • Everyone will be taken into the air and brought to Heaven

Today • Calvary Chapel refers to themselves as a “fellowship of churches” rather than a single denomination • They have over 1000 congregations throughout the world • Pastors preside over Mass and guide followers throughout their lives • California is home to the most churches, with 249 • Very much like evangelical Christianity
