  1. TRHS Action PlanUpdates 2013-14

  2. Goal 1 • Increase Academic, Personal, Creative and Social Growth as measured by: • An increase of 20% of students who identify a TRHS adult who supports them, by February, 2014; • A plan for the implementation of individualized digital portfolio by September, 2014; • An increase of 10% of student participation in multiple, flexible pathways towards college and career readiness by June, 2014.

  3. Action Steps for Goal 1 • Restructure the current advisory program to strengthen student to adult connections. • Promote and expand multiple, flexible pathways for college and career readiness. • Explore the increased use of digital portfolios. • Increase student participation in school activities that promote positive school culture and social interactions.

  4. Update: Advisory Program Ongoing • Freshman Advisory Program - increased adult to student connection from 77% to 86%. • School-Wide Advisory Program – goal is for the start of the 14-15 school year. • A committee is working on the logistics and curriculum.

  5. Update: Multiple-Flexible Pathways Ongoing • Evening Division : Spring 2014: 148 students for 228 enrollments. • VLACS: Currently 77 course enrollments with an additional 16 course completions. • Dual Enrollment: • Added discrete math. • Looking at additional courses through NECCO in conjunction with Sanborn HS.

  6. Update: Multiple-Flexible Pathways Ongoing • Summer School • Exploring half credit elective classes and enrichment activities. • An expanded plan has been written for Summer School 2015 with additions to be reflected in FY16 budget proposal.

  7. Update: Digital Portfolios Ongoing • Committee is looking at Google Apps in Education for ePortfolios. • Implementation plan is over 2 years. • Start in 14/15 school year at the middle school. • 15/16 in Freshman Academy. • This will be presented to the Curriculum and Assessment Committee at June meeting.

  8. Update: Student Involvement Towards a Positive School Climate Ongoing • Jeff Yalden • Recognizing and embracing our differences. • School-wide celebration of our students on December 20th and May 9th. • Life of an Athlete. • Increased community activities • Dance lessons and Senior Citizen Prom. • Strut for a cure and Relay for a Cause. • Owls Pantry • Through Quarter 3, discipline referrals are down 37.09%.

  9. Goal 2 • Increase student achievement as measured by a 3 percentage point increase in students scoring proficiency or better in NECAP standardized testing, a 10% increase in student attendance rates, and a 10% increase in the number of students with passing grades by June 2014.

  10. Action Steps for Goal 2 • Attendance Dean will create relationships with students with poor attendance and strategize to create new patterns of improved attendance. (Engaging all kids in their education) • Re-organization of Administrative team and Curriculum Deans to ensure best practices in instruction and assessment through classroom observation and targeted feedback.

  11. Action Steps for Goal 2 • Align TRHS RTI practices with the newly created district guidelines and provide professional development to staff. • Work with the Director of Secondary Education and Director of Guidance to align grade and competency reporting for grades 6-12. • Improve academic performance of at-risk and special needs students through analysis of standardized test results and targeted instruction.

  12. Update: The Attendance Dean Will Work to Engage Students in Their Education Ongoing • Through Quarter 3, the total number of absences has decreased by 8.56% • Through Semester 1, students with 10 or more absences has decreased by 14.67% • 2012-2013 Semester 1, 103 students in jeopardy of not receiving credit. 100% completed Attendance Recovery work • 2013-2014 Semester 1, 46 students in jeopardy of not receiving credit due to absences. 85% completed Attendance Recovery work

  13. Update: Reorganization of Administrative Unit Completed • Members are able to focus on their particular areas. • There is more opportunity for meaningful conversations around teaching and learning. • We have more clearly defined goals and objectives.

  14. Update: Create RTI Practices Ongoing • April, 2014: RTI Needs Assessment Survey distributed to district staff. • Results will be used to identify professional development needs and to create a plan to further implement RTI at the high school and throughout the district. • 2014-2015: data from STAR assessment will be available to teachers to help focus Tier II interventions.

  15. Update: 6-12 Alignment of Grade Reporting Ongoing • Our monthly 6-12 alignment meetings have brought about the following: • A consistent report card format for both the Middle and High Schools for 13-14. • Reported grades based on a 100 point scale. • A common 10% homework grade for 14-15. • Competency based assessments at both levels.

  16. Update: Performance of Special Needs Students Ongoing • A centralized a unified method for data collection of student skillshas been established by the Special Ed. Department. • Targeted instruction delivery options have been very successful. • Student needs for 2014-2015 will be examined to determine if current delivery systems will meet the demands.

  17. Goal 3 • Align TRHS curriculum to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as measured by “cross walk” documents and approval by the district curriculum and assessment committee by June 2014.

Action Steps for Goal 3 • Create a timeline for curriculum, course and program of studies approvals. • Continue the work of aligning current curricula to the Common Core State Standards using the new district curriculum template. • Focus professional development on content based literacy to align with the Common Core State Standards.

  19. Action Steps for Goal 3 • Teachers will present course syllabi using a common template. • Identify career and college readiness standards that will be embedded into the curriculum documents.

  20. Update: Timeline for Course Approval and Program of StudiesCompleted • A timeline and procedures for new course approvals was created by the TRSD Curriculum and Assessment Committee. • We have done a full AP curriculum and training needs analysis.

  21. Update: Curriculum Aligned to CCSS Using the New UBD Template Ongoing • We will finish K-12 Math and bring it forward in the fall 2014. • From there we will move on to Language Arts, then Science, Social Studies, World Languages and Unified Arts. • Weekly K-12 meetings to review the process. • Workgroups will meet throughout the summer to ensure completion.

  22. Update: Focused PD Around CCSSOngoing • Dr. Jody Polleck- vocabulary instruction and reading in the content area. • This year focus on vocabulary and reading. • Next year focus on writing. • March, 2014: 6-12 Instructional Rounds on vocabulary instruction. • Secondary literacy committee has been formed and has met three times. • 2014-15: Content literacy will be added to 6-12 walk-through forms for data collection purposes.

  23. Update: Common Course Syllabi in All CoursesOngoing • 2013-14: All course syllabi used a common template. • Teachers submitted all syllabi for approval. • 2014-15: alignment of grading policies and protocols across courses will be added.

  24. Update: Career and College Standards Included in the New Curriculum DocumentsOngoing • The characteristics of the Timberlane Graduate have been identified • These characteristics will define our career and college readiness standards. • These characteristics will be embedded in the new UBD curriculum documents.

  25. Goal 4 • Increase security measures and maintain the physical plant utilizing preventative measures in order to create better learning and teaching environments.

Action Steps for Goal 4 • Examine options for multi-purpose instructional spaces and learning suites within the current facility. • Facilitate safety training for all staff members. • Explore options to ensure security for students traveling between the buildings on the Greenough Road campus. • Improve the “curb appeal” of the high school grounds.

  27. Update: Look for Multi-Purpose Spaces and Learning Suites in the BuildingOngoing • Identified need for improvement of existing learning spaces by constructing permanent walls in the triad classrooms i.e. 412, 600 and 612. • The removal of temporary partitioned walls will decrease noise from adjacent rooms and improve the overall learning environment for students.

  28. Update: Facilitate Safety Training For All Staff MembersCompleted • Safety training for all staff was performed at PD day in August, 2013. • TRHS Safety Committee Meetings have been held quarterly and minutes have been distributed to the staff. • NIMS Training for all safety personnel was recommended on 10-22-2013.

  29. Update: Ensure Security for Students Between the Buildings on the CampusCompleted • TRSD Campus Security meetings held on February 14, March 3, and April 18, 2014. • Attendees: Scott Strainge, Maria Di Nola, Mike Hogan, Chief McCardle, Officer Garney, Anthony DiBartolomeo, and Dana Giampaolo.

  30. Update: Improve the “Curb Appeal” of the High School GroundsOngoing • The new sign and owl on the building have added visibility and identity to the school. (Gift of the Class of 2013) • An additional facilities crew member has been hired.
