  1. How Digit Ratios Correlate With Personality TraitsResearch by:Macey MayesChristian Winters

  2. Introduction A digit ratio is the ratio of the lengths of different digits or fingers typically measured from the midpoint of bottom crease where the finger joins the hand to the tip of the finger.

  3. Introduction (cont.) • Digit ratios may indicate the environment of your mother’s womb just weeks after conception – a time when your fingers, as well as your brain, are beginning to develop.

  4. Introduction (cont.) • Digit ratio is affected by the amount of exposure to androgens - male sex hormones like testosterone. • These chemical messengers, cause chain reactions in the body - encouraging and inhibiting growth in brain regions and causing changes in other physical traits.

  5. Introduction (cont.) • Digit ratio is a marker for brain differences molded by hormones. From this theory stemmed a larger notion – could 2D:4D digit ratios correlate with various physical and behavioral traits?

  6. Purpose of Research • The purpose of this research project is to determine a correlation between digit ratios and specific personality traits.

  7. Hypothesis for the Research Null Hypothesis: Digit ratios will have no correlation with personality traits. Alternative Hypothesis: Digit ratios will have a correlation with personality traits.

  8. Method • 1.  Males and females will have the palm of their dominant hand photocopied. • 2.  Using calipers, a measurement of the digits 2D(index finger) and 4D (ring finger) will be taken.

  9. Method (cont.) • 3. Each individual will take a personality test, the results will be matched with the ratio measurements of each individual. • 4. The results of the data collection will be looked at to find any correlation for ratios and personality traits.
