  1. Candid PhotograpHy Catching People doing what they do

  2. Candid Photos • A genuine smile is preferable to a forced one • Spontaneity is the key • Strive for photos where your subject looks natural, not posed

  3. Candid Photos • Remember that taking candid photos is not about you, it is about what you see in your viewfinder, or in your screen • Keep your attention focused off of you

  4. Candid Photos • You want to avoid being overly noticeable • You want to blend into the background • Avoid wearing bright colors • Stand or sit somewhere where you will be inconspicuous

  5. Candid Photos • Look for people going about their business • Notice where the action is and frame your photo accordingly

  6. Candid Photos • Keep your camera out of your eye line • Make the most out of the lens of your camera, from places people don’t expect you to take photos • Try zooming in all the way and then focusing on the action

  7. Candid Photos • Digital Cameras are ideal for taking candid photos • The LCD screen allows you to not have to hold the camera to your face • If sitting at a table, keep the camera low

  8. Candid Photos • Be sure to follow the Rule of Thirds • Turn the grid on if you have one

  9. Candid Photos • If an action is happening or about to happen, position your subject at one of the intersections so that their face leads you into the photograph • Let your subject launch the action

  10. Candid Photos • Learn your camera’s “shutter lag” time • Prepare so that you do not lose your photo due to “shutter lag” • It will become instinctual once you have worked with your camera for a while

  11. Candid Photos • You can reduce your lag time by pre-focusing • Hold the shutter release half way down to pre-focus • Your camera is now ready to take the photo when the action moves

  12. Candid Photos

  13. Something not to do • Avoid backs of heads • Avoid backs and butts
