  2. EasternSlovak Water Company, a.s. Košice • The contribution is in the form of a short call-technical summary information about implemented and planned projects co-financed by EU funds, whether it's in the ISPA projects under the Cohesion Fund or European Regional Development Fund. This touches on major projects whose capital cost is more than 25 million EUR. • These are projects that East Slovak Water Company (VVS a.s) implemented in the programming period 2004-2006, and prepares in the programming period 2007-2013. Projects were undertaken in order to meet obligations under the Treaty of Accession of the Slovak Republic to the European Union, not only by increasing the share connection of population, so the public water supply, bat especially public sewers, and also the related security for sustainable development. • At the same time presenting the contribution of the projects are implemented and evaluated their impact, both on the population in the project area, as well as the recipient of funds from EU funds, at the East Slovak Water Company (VVS a.s.) .

  5. Thepresentwaternetwork EasternSlovak Water Company, a.s. Košice • According to date from 2007, 890 434 people used the public water network, which means 72,2 percent of the population. Of the total of 944 towns and villages, 494 have a local water network, of which 321 are owned by VVS, a.s., Kosice and 103 are run by the company trough agreements with the local councils that own the network. In a further 70 towns and villages, local networks are operated partly by the respective local councils and partly by our company. • The company supplies water to these towns and villages through 227 public conduits, of which 55 are communal. The length of the network run by VVS, a.s., is 5 368 km, of which 4 153 km is made up of communal networks. • Due to the terrain conditions, most of the water conduits operated by VVS, a.s., are pressurized, sometimes a combination of pressurised and non-pressurised. There are very few gravitational ones. The pressurised networks are more difficult the operate and consume a great deal of electricity. • The supply the public, there are 788 surface and underground water sources of which 759 are underground water sources |367 springs, 392 wels| and 29 surface water sources. The most important ones are reservoirs Starina, |which supplies to the towns of Snina, Humenne, VranovnadToplou, Trebisov, Presov and Kosice| and Bukovec |which supplies to the Kosice municipal network| and Brezovica- TichyPotok. Of the total water produced 52,3 percent comes from underground and 47,7 percent from surface sources. Surface water must be treated in treatment plants. The biggest one is the Stakčin water treatment plant with a capacity of 1 000 l.s-1, which is part of the East Slovakia water network Starina – Košice.

  6. Thepresentsewagesystem EasternSlovak Water Company, a.s. Košice • 634 709 inhabitants 51,5 percent of the population – now use the public sewage system. Sewage systems are utilised in 99 communities, with 51 sewage networks owned by VVS, a.s. and 13 run by it on agreement with local councils. In 35 towns and villages networks are jointly by run VVS, a.s. and the local councils VVS, a.s. also has 70 sewage systems with treatment plants, of which 65 are mechanical – biological and 5 mechanical. 632 946 people use sewage systems with treatment facilities. The length of the sewage systems run by VVS, a.s. is 1,708 km.

  7. Vision EasternSlovak Water Company, a.s. Košice • The East Slovak Water Company , a.s. aims to improve the quality of life of the people is its region of operation through supplying quality drinking water via water network , and draining away waste water via sewage systems. VVS,a.s. is aware of the need for further developing of its network s of drinking and waste water conduits, in order that more and more people can get connected to these public systems. • VVS, a.s. protects the environment in its range of business operations in compliance with the regulations concerning water quality and waste water treatment. The company builds water treatment plants, or completes the construction of partly-built water treatment plants in order to increase their effectiveness. • The company is governed by the aim of creating a viable business, with a profitability similar to that of other businesses in this field, and to increase the shareholder value. • VVS, a.s. sales policy is to always establish the right price for water, so that it is both acceptable to the population and profitable for the company. • Last but not least, corporate social responsibility compels the company to endeavour to ensure stability for its workforce with good remuneration and benefits.

  8. Enviroment impacts EasternSlovak Water Company, a.s. Košice • The legal framework for environmental protection in Slovakia is now being approximated to that of the EU. Implementing EU directives for water management in Slovakia will cost more than 186bn SKK. EU directives stipulate the requirements for water, eg. for the quality of surface water intended for human consumption as well as qualitative parameters for water that requires protection to sustain life in water flows. Other directives stipulate limits for releasing waste water and gives stricter criteria regarding waste water monitoring. This touches on, to a great extent, the current environmental issues in the Košice and Prešov regions. • In terms of qualitative protection the key issue is tackling the sources of pollution whether they be point sources (waste water released from factories, agricultural sites and residential areas) or area sources. Whole basins require revitalisation. Thus, the occurrence and intensity of flood flows will be reduced, soil erosion and subsequent sedimentation of streams and lakes will be lessened. • VVS, a.s. aims at making water treatment plants highly effective, using modern technology. It also aims at maintaining the reliability and performance of all system pipelines in order to keep the risks of pollution to a minimum. • VVS, a.s. aims to achieve the highest possible quality of treated waste water to be released • into the environment, ie ensuring the maximum effectiveness of waste water treatment plants by utilising modern technologies and process automation, as well as maintaining the reliability and performance of all the system pipelines to keep risks of pollution at a minimum.

  9. Waste water treatment EasternSlovak Water Company, a.s. Košice • Waste water treatment VVS, a.s. runs 70 waste water treatments, of which 44 are owned by the company, and of these, 40 are mechanical-biological and 4 mechanical. There are contracts between our company and municipalities, based on which werun mechanical-biological waste water reatment plants. • The total capacity of these is 3902 l/s. The effectiveness of the treatment, as shown in BOD5 is approx 50% for mechanical plants and approx 92- 96 % for mechanical-biological plants. The total amount of organic sludge is approx. 11 000 tons a year, and 10 000 tons of dried sludge is produced. • Mechanical–biological waste water treatment plants utilise an aerobic treatment process with bubble aeration, and anaerobic or aerobic stabilisation of sludge. Mechanical treatment plants use tanks with openings that stabilize sludge anaerobically. Methods for sludge stabilisation are as follows: in the bigger plants anaerobic stabilisation (heated mesophile or cold) and in the small ones aerobic stabilisation (slitted tanks, sludge boxes, simultaneous). Sludge is mechanically dehumified on belt presses and centrifuges. Sludge produced in small treatment plants is transported for further treatment to large waste water treatment plants or else dehumified at sludge fields. • Old treatment plants built in the 70s are being phased out and replaced by modern technologies based on low loaded activation with aerobic stabilisation of sludge, which are able to withstand substantial surges in substance load and thus ensure stability and effectiveness of the process. • Because of stricter regulations on the quality of water released, especially in terms of limits for nitrogen and hosphorus, refurbishments or intensifications were undertaken, eg on treatment plant Košice, Humenné, Revúca. Plants Prešov, Sabinov are being refurbished now and new treatment plants in Vranov and Lipany are being built.
