Optimazation of EDM Process for Multiple Performance Characteristics Using Taguchi Method and Grey Relational Analysis Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology 24 (5) (2010) 1083~1090 www.springerlink.com/content/1738-494x DOI 10.1007/s12206-010-0305-8 Jong Hyuk Jung and Won Tae Kwon Department of Mechanical and Information Engineering, University of Seoul, Seoul, 130-743, Korea (Manuscript Received September 24, 2009; Revised November 2, 2009; Accepted November 30, 2009)
EXPERIMENT AND RESULT Form micro hole of maximum aspect ratio • Experiment condition PURPOSE Minimum diameter Result of preliminary experiment
RESULT OF EXPERIMENT • Entrance clearance indicated difference between the radius electrode and the machine micro hole at the micro hole entrance. • Exit clearance correspondingly electrode between radius and micro hole exit. • Ideal case should diameter electrode equal to micro hole
Determination of the machining condition • The machining time and the number of shorts does not show a significant relation to the size of the micro-hole, which, rather, is related to productivity
ANALYSIS OF THE RESULT TAGUCHI METHOD • Variation of Voltage • Variation of Resistance • Variation of Feed Rate • Variation of Capacitance • Relationship between electrical characteristics and electrical parameter
Grey Relational Analysis • Grey relational analysis • Evaluated Grey relational coefficient and grade • ANOVA results for Grey grade • Determination of process parameters
CONCLUSION • The Taguchi method was employed to determine the relations between the machining, parameters and the process characteristics. • The input voltage and the capacitance were found to be the most significant controlling parameters.
Why do we use the journal and the method? • Micro-EDM can be attributed to advantages. • Grey relational analysis can be used to resolve the complicated interrelationships. • The Taguchi method was employed to determine the relations between the machining, parameters and the process characteristics
