  2. EFFECTIVE HAZARD COMMUNICATION • REQUIRES: • THE COMPANY TO IDENTIFY HAZARDOUS MATERIALS THAT ARE PRESENT AT THE SITE • THE COMPANY TO INFORM THE STAFF HOW • TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM THE SPECIFIC HAZARDS OF CHEMICALS • STAFF REQUIRED TO FOLLOW POLICES AND PROCEDURES TO AVOID CHEMICAL EXPOSURES

  3. KEY POINTS FOR EMPLOYEES TO KNOW • WHAT ARE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS? • WHERE WOULD I GET INFORMATION ABOUT HAZARDOUS MATERIALS? • WHAT WOULD I DO IF A CHEMICAL SPILL WERE TO HAPPEN? • HOW DO I HANDLE, TRANSPORT, STORAGE AND DISPOSAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS?

  4. WHY IS THIS KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HAZARDOUS MATERIALS IMPORTANT? • BECAUSE THE SAFETY OF YOU, YOUR CO-WORKERS AND THE OPERATION DEPENDS ON IT. • IT’S YOUR RIGHT UNDER THE LAW TO BE INFORMED ABOUT THE HAZARDS OF CHEMICALS AND PRODUCTS YOU WORK WITH.

  5. WHAT ARE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS? • HAZARDOUS MATERIALS ARE SUBSTANCES THAT ARE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS TO YOUR SAFETY AND HEALTH. • THEY INCLUDE: IRRITATING, SENSITIZING AND TOXIC CHEMICALS AND DUST, FLAMMABLE, CORROSIVE AND REACTIVE SUBSTANCES, AND COMPRESSED GASES.

  6. WHERE WOULD I GET INFORMATION ABOUT HAZARDOUS MATERIALS ? • INFORMATION ABOUT THE HAZARDOUS PROPERTIES OF A CHEMICAL CAN BE FOUND ON THE CHEMICAL’S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS). • MSDS’S ARE FOUND IN MSDS MANUALS LOCATED IN THE WORKPLACE • THE CONTAINER’S LABEL WILL LIST THE HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF THE CHEMICAL AGENT.

  7. SITE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • LIST ALL CHEMICALS AT SITE • MSDS MANUAL AVALABLE TO ALL • COPY OF OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 AVAILABLE • LABELS ON CHEMICALS • EVERYONE SHOULD BE TRAINED

  8. WHAT IS AN MSDS? • TECHNICAL DOCUMENT THAT CONTAINS DIFFERENT TYPES OF INFORMATION RELATING TO A SPECIFIC CHEMICAL OR PRODUCT • ALL MANUFACTURERS AND DISTRIBUTORS OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS ARE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE MSDS’S TO CUSTOMERS

  9. WHAT CAN I LEARN FROM AN MSDS? • WHO MAKES THE STUFF? • WHAT’S IN IT? • PHYSICAL PROPERTIES • WILL IT BURN? • DOES IT REACT WITH OTHER CHEMICALS? • ARE THERE HEALTH HAZARDS TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT?

  10. WHAT CAN I LEARN FROM AN MSDS CONT.? • WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO PROTECT MYSELF? • WHAT SHOULD BE DONE IF THE “STUFF” LEAKS? • SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS SUCH AS STORAGE REQUIREMENTS, ETC.

  11. LABELING REQUIREMENTS • STORED IN ORIGINAL CONTAINERS • NO UNMARKED CONTAINERS • MUST BE ABLE TO READ • MUST STATE THE NAME OF THE CHEMICAL, MANUFACTURERS NAME AND ADDRESS, AND THE HAZARDS WARNINGS

  12. WHO DO I CALL IN CASE OF A CHEMICAL SPILL? • IF A CHEMICAL SPILL OCCURS, THE EMERGENCY REPONSE PROCEDURES SHOULD BE KNOWN. REFER TO THE MSDS • KNOW THE LOCAL HAZMAT PHONE NUMBER OR LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT

  13. SUMMARY • KNOWING THE HAZARDS OF THE CHEMICALS YOU WORK WITH WILL HELP YOU PROTECT YOURSELF, YOUR CO-WORKERS, & OUR CUSTOMERS. • KNOWING WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF A SPILL, HELPS FACILITATE QUICK RESPONSE AND REDUCE HEALTH RISK. • MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT HAZARDS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE CHEMICALS YOU USE, PROTECT YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT PPE, & KNOW WHAT TO DO IF A CHEMICAL SPILL OCCURS.
