  2. Why study these temptations? • To learn from Jesus and become more like Him 2 Cor. 3:17-18 • To become more aware of Satan’s devices 2 Cor. 2:11 • To be better equipped to overcome our temptations 2 Tim. 3:16-17 • To give others hope in their struggle against sin 2 Tim. 2:24-26, Heb. 2:18

  3. The Setting • “Immediately” after baptism Mark 1:12-13 • Alone in the wilderness • Fasted 40 days

  4. Lust of the flesh Lust of the eyes The pride of life Make stone into bread Showed all the kingdoms of earth “If you’re the Son of God, the angels will take care of you” Three Avenues of Temptation1 John 2:16

Jesus’ Response • “It is written” Psalm 119:11 • Tempted in all points but without sin Hebrews 4:15, 2:18 • Process of temptation James 1:14-15 • desire (natural condition of man) • enticed (sinful idea introduced based on desire) • conceived (sin in heart) • sin (action) • death (consequence)

  11. The Third Temptation • Pride is the most powerful temptation • Pride often uses the other temptations Genesis 2:9, 3:6 • Satan promises happiness but cannot deliver his way (deceiver) • God’s way provides true happiness and MORE

  12. The Result • A perfect sacrifice Romans 3:23-26 • A perfect High Priest Hebrews 4:15 • “angels ministered to Him” • Joy Heb. 12:2

  13. The Result • You can have the same result in Christ through forgiveness by • Faith Romans 10:9-10, • Repentance Romans 2:4, • Confession Romans 10:9-10, • Baptism Romans 6:3-4, • Living no longer in sin Romans 6:1-7
