  1. Thesis Statements Writing 1.1- Establish a controlling impression or coherent thesis that conveys a clear and distinctive perspective on the subject

  2. Objective/ Target • Students will compose thesis statements that clearly state their perspective and opinion on the topic and include three reasons that support their opinion.

  3. Big Idea • A thesis statement is the writer’s opinion on the topic. • It must be written in the form of a statement. • It should guide the entire essay.

  4. More Thesis Information • A coherent thesis holds a piece of writing together. • Its purpose is to set forth the writer’s perspective on the subject at hand. • A thesis statement should be powerful enough to guide the direction of the entire piece of writing.

  5. Sample thesis statement #1 • Topic of essay: body piercing/ tattoos for teens • Opinion: teens should not be allowed to get tattoos or body piercings • Reasons: • they may regret it later • it is only a trend • can cause infection or health problems

  6. Sample thesis statement #1 (cont’d) • Thesis statement: • Teens should not be allowed to get tattoos or body piercings since this drastic expression of individuality is a trend which will eventually go out of style, leaving teens with a permanent mark they may regret later- especially when their body art results in infection or other unforeseen health problems.

  7. Sample thesis statement #2 • Topic of Essay: the effects of smoking • Opinion: smoking is harmful and should be made illegal • Reasons: • it is addictive • it can cause cancer • it can kill

  8. Sample thesis statement #2 (cont’d) • Thesis Statement: • Smoking is a dangerous, yet currently legal habit that is addictive, can cause various forms of cancer, and may eventually result in premature death.
