  2. What you will learn! How to solve proportions.

  3. Vocabulary

  4. What you really need to know! A proportionis an equation stating that two ratios are equivalent. Since rates are types of ratios, they can also form proportions.

  5. What you really need to know! In a proportion, a cross productis the product of the numerator of one ratio and the denominator of the other ratio.

  6. Example 1: Determine whether 8/12 and 2/3 form a proportion. 3 x 8 = 24 12 x 2 = 24 YES!

  7. Example 2: Determine whether $5/8oz and $18/32oz form a proportion. 32 x 5 = 160 18 x 8 = 144 NO!

  8. Example 3: 3.5 x n = 6 x 14 3.5n = 84 n = 24

  9. Example 4: According to specifications, the ratio of the length of the U.S. flag to its width must be 1.9 to 1. How long must a U.S. flag be if it is designed to have a width of 2.5 feet?

  10. 1.9 x 2.5 = 1 x ? 4.75 = ? 4.75 ft
