Phillip Renaldo the 3rd and Chickidy:The stars of our egg project! Heidi and Allyson Period 9
My Question • How will my egg change based on the liquid that it soaks in?
My Hypothesis • In vinegar I thought it would shrink. In water I thought it would get bigger. In salt water I thought it would have bubbles on it. In food coloring I thought the color of the egg would change. In cooking oil I thought it would get smaller.
Procedures • Find the mass of the egg using a scale. • Find the circumference of the egg using a string and then a ruler. • Write down observations of egg in data table. • Using a graduated cylinder, measure 200ml of vinegar and add to container. • Carefully add egg to container and leave for 24 hours. • Repeat steps 1-5 but with salt water, then food coloring, then a liquid of choice.
Day 1 Vinegar • Today we put the egg in 200mL of vinegar. The egg was white, smooth, had a hard shell and oval.
Day 2 Water • Today we put the egg in 200mL of water. The egg was yellow-white, slimey and oval.
Day 3 Saltwater • Today we put the egg in 200mL of saltwater. The egg broke and we started with another one.
Day 4 Food Coloring • Today we put the egg in 200mL of red food coloring. It got more yellow and bigger.
Day 5 Cooking Oil • Today we put the egg in 200mL Cooking Oil.The egg got bigger and more red. It was round and very slimy.
Day 6 Finished • Today we finished our egg experiment. Our egg got smaller after putting it in oil. The yolk was red-orange.
Conclusion • Some parts of our hypothesis were wrong but some were correct. We were correct in that the food coloring would change the color and correct that the water would make it bigger. The rest of our hypothesis was incorrect. In vinegar the egg shell came off a little. In water osmosis let water in so the egg got bigger. In saltwater osmosis let more water in and food coloring turned our egg red. In cooking oil osmosis pushed some water out of our egg making it a lot smaller.
