  1. Literacy Tutoring How to begin, observe, and plan

  2. Preparing for your pupil • Consider information provided by parent. • Begin reviewing activities, lessons, and philosophy related to the suggested needs.

  3. Preparing a Folder Include the following: • Contract for term and expectations • Writing paper (preferably a notebook or pad) • Burke Reading Interview • Interest Inventory • Tutoring Log

  4. Preparing Materials • Select interest inventory appropriate for age level of the child. • Collect a range of texts for determining instructional level of the reader. • Bring supplies that are potentially necessary

  5. Initial Session • Exchange contact information with parent(s). • Establish pick-up/drop-off routine. • Dismiss parent to begin session. • Burke Reading Interview. • Interest Inventory • Sample readings (to determine instructional level) • Writing Sample (if time allows for it)

  7. Guide for Leveled Books Priorities when selecting materials are: instructional level of the reader, interest of the reader, and purpose of the lesson.

  8. Text Selection Appropriate text selection goes beyond level. Be familiar with the words and type of text. Seek text that will assist in addressing goals. Provide choices to engaged children in text selection.

  9. While Reading Observe and note the following: • Miscues • Expression/Intonation • Fluency • Heeding Punctuation • Retelling

  10. While Writing Observe and note: • Awareness and use of conventions • Spelling attempts & related strategies • Focus • Attitude toward writing and ability • Behaviors during reading of own writing

  11. Activities for Young Learners • Rereading • Sentence Strips • Word Work (Word Families & Finding Relationships) • Semantic Map • Story Mapping • Echo Reading

  12. Literal Literacy • Be explicit while conversing about literacy • Discuss how language works • Highlight and expand on trends and relationships • Remark on strengths and progress • Present purpose of lesson • Model think-aloud and reflection • Question the author
