  1. Evergreen Park School is a Professional Learning Community. The main responsibility of all staff members is to ensure that all children are learning in a safe and orderly environment.

  2. Evergreen Park School • Mission Building a strong foundation for the future • Vision Fostering an inclusive environment focusing on respect, fairness and integrity • Values Be a good citizen, be kind, be responsible and always do your best

  3. Effective Discipline “Enforced rules can make the difference between law and order for all and the reign of terror that exists in many schools. If rules vary from one teacher or one setting to another, the students can, with some justification, challenge them. Variations providean alibi for rule infringements.Consistent enforcementof the code of conduct requires active vigilant supervision and is one of the most effective and economical prevention strategies.” Schools where Everyone Belongs

  4. Focus on Prevention • Discipline isn’t what you do when students misbehave; it is what you do so they won’t. • Rules and limits are established so students will understand that some behaviours are strictly out-of-bounds. • Revisions and improvements must constantly be made in response to changes in student behaviours and needs.

  5. EPS is a Great Place to Shinefor Elementary (K-4) Sharing and caring Hands are for helping Do the right thing If it hurts; It’s wrong

  6. Fairness Caring Respect Responsibility Citizenship Trustworthiness If it hurts; It’s wrong For Middle School (5-8)

  7. Classroom Expectations • Post and reinforce class expectations. • Students are to clean up after themselves (food, paper, etc., after recess). • Gum, sweets, trading cards and toys are asked to be kept at home. • Skateboards, heelies and rollerblades should only be used outside school hours.

  8. Classroom Expectations • Arrive on time. If a student is late they should be respectful of the class that is already in session. They should knock on the door and wait to be invited to enter. • Lateness—Middle school—(teams/teacher) to decide on a consequence for students who arrive late to class (ex. going to locker, too much time in locker room). • Be prepared for class and have necessary supplies/books. Middle school students should get all materials from their lockers for Per. 1 & 2 at morning entry, materials for Per. 3 & 4 before they have their recess break and materials for the afternoon at the end of the lunch break.

  9. Hallways • Walking at all times. • When coming up and down the stairwell students need to stay to the right and remain in single file. • Transition times need to be quiet. • Middle school teachers (6, 7 and 8) need to monitor the hall during transition times to ensure that the noise level is at a minimum. • Grades K-6 teachers need to walk with their students to and from their exploratory classes.

  10. Hallways (con’t) • Grades K-6 teachers need to walk with their students to and from their exploratory classes. • If you have a prep and you are in grades 7-8 (including exploratory teachers) please walk your students and go pick up your next class a few minutes prior to the end of your prep (same expectation as teachers in grades K-6).

  11. Outside: Grades K-6 (Playground – Morning Entrance) • Students will line up according to whether their class is upstairs (line up on the left) or downstairs (line up on the right). The doors will open at 8:00 am. One of the duty teachers selects two students to open the doors. These students should be chosen prior to the bell ringing and asked to go and wait inside the building; they will be able to open the doors as soon as the bell rings. Students will stand behind the cement divider. Duty teachers, and EAs will be positioned at the doorway divider. There will be teachers and EAs in the middle of the 2 lines (halfway down and also at the end of the line) to encourage the students to maintain separate lines as they enter. • The last teacher on duty entering the building will ensure that the doors are closed and locked.

If there’s an emergency and you need to leave earlier, please advise an administrator. • Be on time for you duties.

  42. Gym Expectations • Grades K-4 • Arrival: • Homeroom teachers are to bring their students to the gym prepared (appropriate gym attire and footwear). • Equipment: • Pick two reliable students to go into the equipment room to pick up light equipment. • When picking up equipment for outdoors (make sure the equipment is for outdoors, see Mrs. Browne for verification) the teacher is responsible for picking up and returning all equipment • Grades 5-8 • Arrival: • If you have a prep period, you are to walk the students you have to the gym. If possible, pick up students at the end of their gym class. • Students are to arrive on time. • Students are to change into appropriate gym attire (t-shirt, shorts or sweat pants and indoor sneakers properly laced/attached). • No sock feet. • Equipment: • Staff, please get equipment before class in the morning, recess time or during lunch time. • Please do not send a student with a note to get equipment during class time as this interrupts the teaching that is going on. • When returning equipment please return to the proper spot.

  43. Gym Expectations • Grades K-4 • Dismissal: • Homeroom teachers are to pick up their students at the designated area either the office door or cafeteria door. • Grades 5-8 • Dismissal: • Students must change into their regular clothes after gym class. • After changing they are to wait in line by the tech. room. • At 2:30pm the phys-ed teacher will help the homeroom teacher supervise any remaining students in the locker room and clean up any leftover equipment not already in place.

  44. Our visibility will improve the behaviours of the students. This will take some time. CONSISTENCY, however, will ensure and bring about success.

  45. Climate Change Research suggests that it takes approximately three years to change the culture of a school, so be prepared to maintain your efforts. Eventually, most students will stop pushing the limits and realize that certain behaviours are simply not acceptable at school.

  46. Keys to Success • Visibility • Consistency • Teaching and Modeling Behaviour • Continue with what works!

  47. Thank you for all your work and for all your efforts!!! Your continued support and vigilance will ensure that all students of EPS feel safe in their learning environment.

  48. Thank You!
