Student Disability Services • What the heck do we do? • Just about everything related to functioning with a disability • Currently have 771 students who have disclosed some type of disability and use accommodations. • Undergraduates • Graduate • Doctoral • Guests • On campus, remote location • Online

Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act of 2008 • Congress reauthorized and amended the ADA in 2008. • Expanded conditions which could be considered a disability. • Brief History • Provides Civil Rights Protection for people with disabilities • Passed in 1990 by George H. Bush (first one) • Civil Rights legislation; enforced by the Office of Civil Rights; Department of Justice

Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act of 2008 • Impact • Doesn’t affect impact higher education as a learning institution Rehabilitation Act of 1973; Section 504 and 508 • Major impact as a business, i.e. hiring, accessibility, accommodating employees, etc. • Expanded, clarified, and reiterated what the basic definition of ‘disability’ was. • Used to be • Having a physical or mental impairment that limited a major life activity • A record of such an impairment • Being regarded as someone with such an impairment

  11. Disability- Impairment-SDS • Student Disability Services operates in the area of IMPAIRMENT • Not all disabilities are impairments but all impairments CAN BE considered a disability. • We need a clear understanding of the symptoms and a diagnosis

Purpose and philosophy of SDS • Great, what does SDS do? • SDS is one of the three legs supporting a healthy individual • SDS does NOT change the person • We change the ENVIRONMENT SO THE PERSON CAN FUNCTION • We alter facilities and policies • Provide accommodations which allow an • Individual with a condition to • Function as independently • And freely as possible
