  2. Radioactive Elements • Radioactive Elements- Unstable elements that naturally break down or decay and slowly convert to a more stable non-radioactive substance. • Example of Radioactive Elements: Uranium, Radium, Plutonium

  3. Radioactive Decay • Radioactive Decay- The breaking down or release of particles from the nucleus, and energy in the form of heat and light! • This release of particles and energy is called Radiation

  4. What happens during Radioactive Decay? • As it decays, the atoms of the unstable radioactive element will slowly CHANGE into atoms or a more stable non-radioactive element. • The changing of one element into another through radioactive decay is called: Transmutation

  5. Half Life • Half-Life- the amount of time it takes for half of the atoms of a radioactive element to convert to atoms of a more stable non-radioactive element.
