  1. The State of Hunger & Poverty in the World(2013)

  2. Today, our world houses more than7 billion people.

  3. The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest.

  4. Yet, despite progress, by Catholic Relief Services and others…..

  5. One in eight people – 870 million - goes to sleep hungry every day.

  6. 20% of the world’s population - 1.2 billion -lives in extreme poverty, living on less than $1.25 a day.

  7. (An additional 1.2 billion people live on $1.25 to $2 a day. Thus…)35% of the world’s population - 2.4 billion –lives on less than $2 a day.

  8. The number of people living in extreme poverty could increase by up to 3 billion by 2050 unless urgent action is taken to tackle climate change, deforestation, and air and water pollution.

  9. 11% of the world's population - 783 million -does not have access to clean water.

  10. 35% of the world’s population - 2.5 billion people – still lack access to improved sanitation such as toilets or latrines. Every 20 seconds, a child dies as a result.

  11. In sub-Saharan Africa - one in nine children -die before the age of fiveand in Southern Asia - one in 16 children -die before the age of five.

  12. 57 million children are not attending primary school and the majority of these children are girls.

  13. 2.3 million people are newly infected by HIV each year, with 1.6 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa.

  14. No one may claim the name of Christian and be comfortable in the face of hunger, homelessness, insecurity, and injustice found in this country and the world. Economic Justice for All #27, U.S. Bishops, 1986
