  1. Cerif 4 DatasetsAn Overview Ryan Henderson Centre for Internet Technologies http://www.cit.sunderland.ac.uk EuroCRIS 2012, Prague 6th-9th June 2012

  2. Introduction • CERIF 4 Datasets (C4D) extends an already established platform • Universities of Glasgow, St Andrews and Sunderland • NERC and EPSRC • Explore representing research data metadata in CERIF

  3. Overview • C4D aims to: • Use CERIF ontologies and syntax to represent metadata • Integrate this metadata with research outputs at each of the three partner institutions

  4. Context • The IRIOS project developed a platform for managing research information exchange using CERIF • EPSRC identifies metadata as a key output from its funded activities • C4D will build on the existing IRIOS platform

  5. RMAS EXPORT Browser C4D Demonstrator (IRIOS) Meta data IMORT Sunderland Dataset EXTRACT Meta data Glasgow Dataset QUERY EXTRACT Meta data St Andrews Dataset EXTRACT Architecture

  6. Datasets • Datasets are an formidable resource • A survey of current datasets was undertaken • Marine sciences common research area • Access to several suitable research datasets

  7. Metadata Standards • It was vital to investigate multiple metadata standards • Marine Science focused but will also be generic • Assess the feasibility of CERIF in representing metadata

  8. Anticipated Outcomes • Framework for incorporating metadata into CERIF • Mapping extending beyond marine datasets • Definition of a CERIF common metadata ontology • Open access metadata repository

  9. Current Status • Metadata Ontology • Taxonomy Definition • Ontology Upload Requirements and Process Definition

  10. Future Development • Synergy between C4D and IRIOS-2 • JISC cloud • Evolution of CERIF • Application of lessons to other areas
