EXECUTIVE ORDER • President Obama signed an Executive Order instructing the federal government to enhance and coordinate Federal efforts to promote exports. • The President ordered the following measure to ensure high-level coordination of U.S. export promotion activities: • Creating the Export Promotion Cabinet • Re-launching the President’s Export Council (PEC)

  21. GOVERNMENT-WIDE EXPORT ADVOCACY EFFORT U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Lockeissued Government-wide advocacy instruction for all senior level officials who work with foreign counterparts in the U.S. and abroad. As part of our new advocacy efforts, the U.S. Government is:

Jobs & New York Exports… • Exports Support Jobs for New York's Workers • Export-supported jobs linked to manufacturing account for an estimated 3.1 percent of New York's total private-sector employment. • More than one-fifth (20.9 percent) of all manufacturing workers in New York depend on exports for their jobs. (2008 data are the latest available.)

Jobs & New York Exports (more)… • Exports Sustain Thousands of New York Businesses • A total of 27,329 companies exported goods from New York locations in 2007, the third highest number among the 50 states. Of those, 94 percent, or 25,657 firms, were small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with fewer than 500 employees. • SMEs generated more than half (55 percent) of New York's total exports of merchandise in 2007. That is the third highest percentage among the 50 states and well above the national average of 30 percent.

  26. Jobs & New York Exports (more)… • New York Depends on World Markets • New York's export shipments of merchandise in 2009 totaled $57.3 billion. New York was the third largest exporter among the 50 states in 2009. • The state's largest market in 2008 was Canada, to which New York exported goods worth $11.1 billion. This was 19 percent of the state's total exports that year. Canada was followed by the United Kingdom ($4.5 billion), Israel ($3.7 billion), Switzerland ($3.3 billion), and Hong Kong ($3.0 billion). • New York's leading manufactured export category is miscellaneous manufactures, which alone accounted for $12.4 billion, or 22 percent of the state's total export shipments in 2009. • Other top manufactured exports from New York are computers and electronic products ($6.3 billion in 2009 exports), machinery manufactures ($5.0 billion), and transportation equipment ($5.0 billion).
