Dive into the magical world of Ireland, where fairies dance and folklore comes to life. This lesson focuses on the blend of realistic fiction, fantasy, and folklore, exploring the enchanting landscapes of Ireland, its mystical fairies, and the literary contributions of author Eoin Colfer. Students will fill out a KWL chart, discussing what they know and want to learn about these topics. Engaging group activities will encourage collaboration and creative thinking, while multimedia resources will provide a visual introduction to the beauty and mystery of Irish culture.

Group Activity! • Your job is to come up with at least three facts about your topic which you will share with the class. • I suggest dividing tasks up amongst your larger group to cast a wider net. • Write your facts down on your KWL worksheet.
Things to think about • How does the combination of Ireland and these Faeries set up your idea of the story? • Does EoinColfer's background make sense in context of him writing this story? • Does knowing this information make you more or less interested in reading the book? • Do you think we could achieve this same type of story here in the US? • Do we have folklore like the Irish?
Homework • Read Chapter 3. • Handout: Please write down at least 1 trait for Holly and a piece of contextual evidence that demonstrates it. • NOTE: This is the same as the Artemis sheet! Do not try and complete this yet! We will be working on it as we go!
