CosmoGrid

CosmoGrid is a Grid-enabled computational project funded by PRTLI. It aims to support various scientific disciplines such as Astrophysics, Geophysics, and Atmospheric Physics by leveraging Grid technology. The project focuses on fostering a sense of community and collaboration within the virtual organization while exploring future directions of data-grids and knowledge-grids.

  3. Philosophy • One Grid (Grid-Ireland) supporting many virtual organisations • CosmoGrid is the first of these • Start with a (hopefully!) straightforward computational grid. • Use this to spawn further data-grids, knowledge-grids etc.

  4. Objectives of CosmoGrid • Astrophysics • High Energy Phenomena • Star formation • Geophysics • Seismic inversions • Rheological modelling • Digital rocks • Atmospheric Physics • Regional climate modelling • Atmospheric aerosol modelling

  5. Character of problems • Causal classical systems  well suited to simple Beowulf type clusters. • Significant overlap in methods, even in underlying mathematical model (eg CFD). • Computationally sophisticated user communities. Well placed to exploit the “resource sharing” fundamental to the Grid concept.

  6. Proposed Implementation • Three large Beowulf clusters interconnected over the Grid. • Dedicated Grid gateway machines in each site centrally monitored and administered by Grid-Ireland. • Extensive use of VRVS for collaboration (might switch to access grid)

  7. Organisational Problems • How do you foster a sense of community and of belonging in a virtual organisation? • What legal structure is appropriate for a virtual organisation? • How do you resolve conflicts of interest in the case of multiple overlapping VOs?

  8. Future Directions • Data-grid(s) • Knowledge grid(s) • e-Scholarship, not just e-Science • Europeanisation and Globalisation
