A or AN? A consonant A car, a bus, a student, a horse…. AN vowel (a, e, i, o, u) An apple, an elephant, an animal…
We use THE with… • The names of certain countries the Netherlands, the Philippines, the United States • The names of certain mountains, rivers, oceans and seas the Andes, the Nile, the Pacific • Points on the globe the Equator, the North Pole • Deserts, forests, gulfs, and peninsulas the Sahara, the Persian Gulf, the Black Forest, the Iberian Peninsula
We can’t use THE with • Names of countries Italy, Mexico, Bolivia… • Names of cities, towns, or states Seoul, Miami • Names of streets • Names of lakes and mountains Lake Erie, mount Everest • Names of continents Asia, Europe
