  6. Demonstrators • The project demonstrates ITS applications at three major events: • the South Africa World Cup (2010)in Cape town, • the India Commonwealth Games (2010) in Delhi, • and the London Olympics (2012). • Design, deployment, demonstrations and evaluation involve SA and Indian partners.

  7. The SA demonstrator: objectives Aims of the Stadium demonstration in Cape Town: • Implement a Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) application that can be used effectively during the 2010 SWC and beyond • Improve the long term performance of minibus taxi public transport services through the use of ITS • LocalPartiesinvolved: PeninsulaHoldings: Minibus Taxi Industry - Western Cape ProvincialGovernment - 2010 FIFA LocalOrganisingCommittee (LOC) - ItalianConsulate in Cape Town - City of Cape Town - National DepartmentofTransport - Departmentof Science and Technology

  8. The SA demonstrator: concept Service provided (by minibus transport operator Peninsula Holdings) during the SWC: Last Mile service to and from the Central Business District BRT station

  9. The SA demonstrator: services Some of the new public transport services being offered by PH are the following: Loop Service Point-to-Point Service Mall Shuttle Contract Services Last Mile Service These new services are based on the DRT and AVM system provided by Stadium

  10. The SA demonstrator: implementation • Implemented: • Server installation at PH premises • SW applications porting (from hosting to physical server at Peninsula premises in Cape Town) • Adaptation of Booking and Dispatching software to new services and to the context of large events • Start up of the call centre for bookings and scheduling of the minibus taxi fleet • Marketing of new services in Cape Town

  11. The SA demonstrator: delivered • The system components: • On Board Equipment for a fleet of 19 vehicles (GPS, OBU, screen, card reader, CCTV, passenger counter) • A control centre for the monitoring of vehicles (AVM) • A booking centre for the management of on-demand transport services • Manuals and training to drivers and call centre operators • Assistance to visitors during SWC (information on the Last Mile Service, channels for booking, etc)

  12. The SA demonstrator: call centre Server and callcentre @ Peninsulapremises – Cape Town

  13. The SA demonstrator: vehicles One of Peninsula Holdings’ vehicles used in Stadium Project On Board Equipment provided by MMIV

  16. The SA demonstrator: booking software Specific fare according to related service (km/passenger-based) Total amount Distance (km) per single request

  17. The India demonstrator: objectives • To develop, implement, test and execute the demonstration during the Commonwealth Games 2010 (New Delhi), testing the ITS applications of Public Transport: • planning, • real time fleet management, • infomobility on mobile devices. • To combine the results of the demonstration, in order to achieve an adequate assessment of potential long term benefits of the STADIUM services.

  18. The India demonstrator: system concept The Demonstrator has been deployed and tested during the XIX Commonwealth Games and is based on the existing Public Transport infrastructures and services. For the demo purposes, a limited area is considered in Delhi, addressing some Metro and 4 BRT lines totalling some 200 GPS equipped buses and a sample paratransit vehicles fleet (taxi and autorickshaw) of about 60 vehicles A demo vehicle has been added showing of additional functions

  19. The India demonstrator: paratransit • The paratransit onboard system for the demonstration vehicle includes: • Onboard computer with GPS, GPRS, • Driver Terminal with 4 buttoms • Loudspeakers for audio announcements

  20. The India demonstrator: demo vehicle • The onboard system for the demonstration vehicle include: • Onboard computer with GPS, UMTS/GPRS, Wifi • Triband GPS, GPRS, Wifi antenna • Driver Terminal • Alarm pedal for emergencies • Loudspeakers for audio announcements • Video surveillance unit with 4 TVCC colour cameras • Automatic Passenger Counters (one for each door)

  21. The India demonstrator: implementation • Support for design activities • Hw and sw procurement for test bed in EU / India • Sw development (planning/supervision/infomobility modules) • Equipment installation • Bus, taxis, autorickshaw, central system, bus • Test integration with DIMTS for bus and OBU of Ashok Leyland for paratransit • Validation on site (EU/ India) • Training on site (DIMTS, SIAM) • System configuration. • A Central system for management • Planning of BRT lines and metro lines • Supervision of buses • Infomoblity platform • About 60 paratransit vehicles (30 taxis, 30 autorickshaw) have been equipped with GPS system • A demo bus fully equipped

  22. The India demonstrator: ITS control center • All the services are centralised in a real-time monitoring and dispatching Control Centre, thanks to a real-time GIS like application. • The control centre displays on electronic maps the Public Transport Lines paths and stops, the real-time vehicle GPS positions and other data, the status of vehicles (buses: off schedule; paratransit: booking status).

  23. The India demonstrator: service planningPT operator perspective • The availability of information depends essentially from the generation of the public transport service planning database, including line paths on electronic maps, timetables, vehicle duties and intersection with other services. • This database is generated by an innovative software application shown at the demo. Among its benefits is the optimization of bus resources and the consequent savings in both capital cost of buses and fuel costs.

  24. The India demonstrator: real time monitoringPT operator perspective • Service status is monitored in the Control Centre by a real-time GPS like application, providing the operator with all information necessary to monitor service status and to define any corrective actions aimed at managing the service, such as recovery delays, managing faults, provide information to users etc. • Operator can display TVCC installed on board For safety /security reason and be in touch with the driver • Operator can send information on bus stop display and on board

  25. The India demonstrator: infomobilityUser perspective • Users may access information onboard (automatic next stop information and other information disseminated by the control centre), on electronic displays at stops, on mobile phones, on the web. • A new website www.newdelhimobile.in, especially designed for mobile devices allows the users to experience the infomobility applications, including • real-time bus waiting time at all the bus stops of the monitored lines • an integrated route planner, • providing detailed directions to the destination, integrating metro, buses and feeder services. • It shows the benefits of multimodal, integrated information to public transport users to plan and make their trip efficiently.

  26. The India demonstrator: infomobilityUser perspective

  27. The STADIUM e-handbook • The ITS Handbook is a Decision Support System (DSS) to guide hosting cities to the decision, planning, implementation process of ITS covering domains such as: • Dynamic traffic management systems & real-time traffic information • Public transport: tracking, fleet management/ demand-responsive transport/etc. • Tools to optimize operational transport plans according to historic and real-time demand data
