Professional Organizations Inhalation Therapy Association (ITA) founded in 1947 ITA became American Association for Inhalation Therapists (AAIT) founded in 1954 AAIT became American Association for Respiratory Therapy (AART) founded 1973 AART became American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) founded in 1982

  4. 1946 - University of Chicago Hospital forms the Inhalation Therapy Association (ITA). • 1947 - The ITA is chartered as a non-profit entity in the state of Illinois. • 1954 - The ITA is renamed American Association of Inhalation Therapists (AAIT). • 1966 - The AAIT is renamed American Association of Inhalation Therapy (AAIT). • 1956 - The AAIT begins publishing a journal called Inhalation Therapy. • 1973 - The AAIT is renamed the American Association of Respiratory Therapy. • 1986 - The AART is renamed the American Association of Respiratory Care.

  5. Professional Organizations (cont.) The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) is anorganization and is the only professional organization supporting Respiratory Care in the United States.

  6. Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) is an accreditation organization dedicated to Respiratory Care CoARCaccredits degree-granting programs in respiratory care

Professional Organizations The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Inc formed in 1960 with the purpose of awarding and maintaining credentialing for Respiratory Therapists in the United States. The NBRC is the only organization in the United States which develops certification examinations for Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs) and Certified Respiratory Therapists (CRTs). The NBRC also offers additional specialization credentialing for respiratory practitioners that hold its certifications

Professional Organizations (cont.) 1980s: state licensure for RTs begins State licensure based on RTs passing entry level exam offered by National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) NBRC offers certification & registry examination for RTs State licensing laws set minimum educational requirements & determine competence to practice State licensing boards also set required amount of continuing education credits (CEU’s) required to keep license to practice

AARC advocates for profession to legislative & regulatory bodies, insurance industry & public AARC sponsors continuing professional educational activities, including conferences to gain CEU’s - go to www.AARC.org AARC publishes monthly science journal RESPIRATORY CARE & news magazine: AARC Times AARC members may join any of 10 Specialty Sections 2002: AARC, NBRC, & CoARC formally express support for all RT’s to seek & obtain RRT credential

History of the RC profession in Saudi Arabia • 1980, Ministry of defense sent students to US to join training program in RT • National Guard also sent students to the US for the same propose • Military hospital in Riyadh has established a diploma with loma Linda university • KFMMC started a diploma in the RT • King faisal university (Dammam University) started the BS in RC in 1419

  11. Professional Organizations OF RC in KSA • December 5, 2004 the first meeting was held in Riyadh to elect the first board of the • (Saudi Respiratory Care Group) • 2005, KFU approved the request to establish the first Saudi Society For Respiratory Care

  14. Saudi Critical Care Society (SCCS) • The Saudi Critical Care Society (SCCS) was established in January of 2007 under the umbrella of Saudi Council for Health Specialties • The Saudi Critical Care Society (SCCS) is dedicated to the critical care community in Saudi Arabia.

Respiratory Care Education • Due to aging population(baby boomers): • Increased demand for RC services & RT’s • As baby boomers age: • More will have asthma, COPD, & other cardiopulmonary diseases • As treatments & technology continue to advance: • RT’s will require more educational preparation

  16. Respiratory Care Education • RT’s of future will focus more on: • Prevention • Protocol administration • Care plan development • Disease management & rehabilitation • Family & patient education • Tobacco cessation counseling

  17. Future of Respiratory Care (cont.) • Task force concludes: RT’s need to be competent in 7 major areas by 2015: • Diagnostics • Chronic disease state management • Evidence-based medicine & Respiratory Care protocols • Patient Assessment • Leadership • Emergency & Critical Care • Therapeutics
