  2. What is an epigraph? • Epigraph: An epigraph is a phrase, quote or poem that is found at the beginning of a literary document. • Discuss with the person next to you: why would an author include an epigraph at the beginning of their text?

  3. Why use epigraphs? • Epigraphs serve to highlight the theme or issue of the text. They can also show us what others think about the topic addressed in the text, or serve as a realia for the text.

  4. Turn to Page 1 • Look at the epigraph included here. • Discuss: with the person next to you, discuss why Sue Monk Kidd chose this epigraph, and how it might be related to chapter 1.

  5. Activity • Form groups of 5- 6 people • Come and get a story book from Miss. Manji • Your group’s responsibility : • Read the fairy tale • create an epigraph which is appropriate for your fairy tale. • Include an explanation for your epigraph (why you would choose to use it if you were the author of this text)
