  3. TERRA NOVA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS • Earn a total of 225 credits • Pass specific subject requirements • Pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

  4. GRADUATION CREDIT REQUIREMENTS • Seniors in good academic standing should have 180 credits to date • Minimum number of credits required for senior status is 165

GRADUATION SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS English- 4 years Math- 3 years Science- 2 years 1 year biological, 1 year physical Social Studies- 3 years 1 year World History, 1 year U.S. History, 1 semester Government, 1 semester Economics Foreign Language or Fine Arts- 1 year Career Technical Education- 1 year Business, Home Economics, Industrial Technology Physical Education- 2 years Health- 1 semester Electives- 60 credits needed for graduation

CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM (CAHSEE) • 2 Sections (1) English Language Arts (2) Math • Students must pass each section with a score of 350 or higher http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/ • Test dates for Seniors October 1st(English) & October 2nd(Math) November 5th (English) & November 6th(Math) March 11th (English) & March 12th (Math)

SENIORITIS • Students need to pass all classes during the day No guarantee that money will be available for after school classes next semester. • No room for students repeating classes at the semester Example: Taking Gov’t and Econ during the day at the same time • All Credit Recovery courses and exams must be completed by MAY 1, 2013—No Exceptions!

California State University • 16 campuses are impacted (out of 23 campuses) Priority given to applicants in the local service area • The minimally eligible student will have fewer options (2.0 GPA with a 1300 SAT score or a 2.99 with a 510 SAT score) • Application fee: $55 • Students who qualify can get up to 4 application waivers • Tuition Increase: $5,970 per year

  15. University of California • UC Merced is the only campus to guarantee admission to all eligible applicants and ELC Students • Application Fee: $70 • Students who qualify can get up to 4 application waivers • Tuition: $13,200 per year

  16. CSU & UC “A-G” SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS • History/Social Science- 2 years • English- 4 years • Math- 3 years* (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II) • Lab Science- 2 years*(1 yr. UC COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW • GPA in “a-g” courses • SAT or ACT w/writing • Courses beyond the minimum 15 “a-g”courses • Honors, AP, IB, college courses • ELC- top 9% • Quality of senior year courses • Academic performance given opportunities available in high school • Outstanding performance in one or more subject areas • Outstanding work in one or more special projects in any academic field • Marked improvement • Talents, achievements • Special projects (evidence of special effort and determination or suitability to a program on a specific campus) • Accomplishments in light of life experience • Location of school or home

UC PERSONAL STATEMENT Purpose • Adds clarity, depth and meaning to information collected in other parts of the UC application • Helps readers know and understand applicants and answer any questions that may come to the evaluator’s mind Instructions • Respond to both prompts 1000 words total Shorter answer should be no less than 250 words • Type answers in a Word document and cut & paste to application

UC PERSONAL STATEMENT Tips • Write personal statement in context of academic transcript/test scores (review these items critically- explain what is not obvious) • Explain who you are in your statement- not your mother, clergyman, brother, teachers, etc. • Focus your answers- do not need to respond to all items being asked for- choose one area that is most relevant • Draft, get feedback and revise • DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO WRITE YOUR STATEMENT!!

UC Eligibility in the Local Context • Those that are in the top 9% of their graduating class qualify as ELC • Students will be notified of their ELC status 4-6 weeks after their application has been submitted • To maintain the ELC status a student must: • Satisfy the general admissions requirements, • Maintain a 3.0 GPA, and • Submit an official copy of ACT with Writing or SAT Reasoning Test scores.

  23. PRIVATE COLLEGE ELIGIBILITY • Admission criteria varies (research individual schools) • Course pattern for admission is similar to CSU & UC • Most require SAT or ACT scores • Personal statement/essay • Letters of Recommendation

APPLYING TO PRIVATE COLLEGES • Private colleges use either their own application for admission or the common application • For a listing of the 488 private colleges that use the common application: www.commonapp.org • Make note of application deadlines- will vary by college Fee: $60 Application fee waivers available to eligible students • Personal statement/essay usually required • Letters of Recommendation required from 2 teachers & 1 counselor • Please notify teacher/counselor two weeks prior to deadline • Interviews required for certain colleges

SAT/ACT • CSU’s will use highest SAT or ACT score from multiple sittings • UC’s will use only highest combined SAT or ACT score from a single sitting • All SAT and ACT tests must be completed by DECEMBER of Senior year • Impacted UC/CSU campuses prefer that students complete testing by the NOVEMBER test dates

Students must indicate Terra Nova as their school when taking the SAT/ACT: TN code is: 050721 • In addition to self-reporting their SAT/ACT scores into their application, students must also send scores to colleges via www.collegeboard.com • Fee is $11 per campus • CSU has a universal code: 3594 • For UC’s if you send score to one UC campus, all campuses will receive it.  • Student athletes must also send scores to NCAA clearinghouse: NCAA code is: 9999

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS DECISIONS • Most CSU & UC Campuses will notify students of admissions decision by March 2014 • Private Colleges will notify students of admissions decisions on a rolling basis, depending on school- most decisions should be made by March • Conditions of Admission *Complete all coursework reported in the application with appropriate grades *Notify campus in a timely manner of deficient grades in the fall or spring of senior year *Notify campus of any change in course selection

NOW THAT I’M GOING TO COLLEGE • Students should attend Spring Open Houses to finalize decision • Students must choose campus of attendance and submit their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) and deposit by May 1st deadline FAILURE TO MEET DEADLINE = NO COLLEGE ADMISSION • Make residence hall decisions • Take English and Math Placement Tests- by May 4th • Read College Advising Materials and contact Academic Advisor • Attend College Orientation- most are mandatory

STUDENT ATHLETES • If students are planning on competing at a Division I or Division II college, they must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse ASAP www.eligibilitycenter.org FEE: $70 Fee waivers available to students on the subsidized lunch program, please see VPG • Make contact with coach at college campus to make sure you are on track

  31. FINANCIAL AID • ALL students should apply for financial aid regardless of whether or not they think they will qualify • 2 Sources of Financial Assistance (1) Funding from the Federal & State Money *Grants, Loans & Work Study (2) Scholarships

FINANCIAL AID GOVERNMENT AND STATE • File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) www.fafsa.ed.gov January 1st- March 2nd • File the Cal Grant GPA verification form Students will get the form in their Gov’t/ Econ classes in January January 1st- March 2nd You should never have to pay to fill out and submit the FAFSA!

FINANCIAL AIDPRIVATE COLLEGES • Many private colleges require students to complete the CSS Profile in addition to the FAFSA and Cal Grant GPA verification form • CSS Profile helps colleges award their private student aid funds • Must complete the CSS Profile online www.collegeboard.org/profile Visit “students” section of collegeboard Click on the CSS/Profile section under “Pay for College” Apply starting October 1st • FEE: $25 initial application fee $16 per report Fee waivers available to students who qualify, see counselor HELP: help@cssprofile.org

SENIOR CHECK-OUT • Monday, May 19th (starts at 2:45 p.m.) • All bills must be paid for students to check-out for graduation • All books must be returned to the library prior to check-out • Located in the cafeteria • Students get in line based on their last name and check in with their counselor.
