  1. Le Subjonctif le français 3

  2. A MOOD… • The INDICATIVE MOOD: express facts, describe reality • The IMPERATIVE MOOD: commands • The SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD: wishes, desires, necessities, emotions, doubts, suppositionsthings that aren’t facts • SUBJUNCTIVE = SUBJECTIVE

  3. REGULAR FORMATION * This pattern is also true for many 1- and 2-stem irregular verbs!

  4. REGULAR IRREGULARS

  5. IRREGULAR FORMATION • Spelling-change, 2-stem boot, and 3-stem verbs • Present indicative • the “ils” stem is different from the “nous” and vous” stem in the present • Subjunctive • many of these verbs use the “ils” stem for the boot and the “nous” stem for “nous” and vous” • Exemple: DEVOIR: (ils doivent, nous devons)

  6. IRREGULAR FORMS (ONE STEM) • FAIRE…FASS • POUVOIR…PUISS • SAVOIR…SACH

  7. IRREGULAR FORMS (TWO STEM -BOOT) • ALLER (aill—, all—) • ETRE (soi—, soy—) • AVOIR (ai—, ay—)

  9. EMPLOIS: NOTES GÉNÉRALES • The subjunctive mood almost always appears in dependent and relative clauses. • Whether or not to use the subjunctive depends on the content of the independent or main clause. • Don’t use the subjunctive unless the subjects of each clause are different. • Compare: • Je veux que tu reviennes. • Je veux revenir.

  10. EMPLOI1: Les nécéssités • Use the subjunctive after expressions showing necessity • Il faut • Use “il faut” with the subjunctive to say what someone must do • Il faut que j’étudie avant mon examen de français. • Il faut que tu finisses tes devoirs. • Use “il ne faut pas” with the subjunctive to say what someone must not do • Il ne faut pas que tu fasses des textos en classe. • Note: use “il faut” with an infinitive to make generalizations about what people must do • Il faut étudier avant les examens. • Il faut finir les devoirs. • Il est nécessaire que… • Il est nécessaire que je parte avant minuit.

  11. Emploi 2: Les désirs • Use the subjunctive to show what someone wants others to do • Vouloir • Je veuxqueturéussisses. • Désirer • Nous désironsquevousveniez à la fête. • If you want to do something yourself, use an infinitive • Je veuxréussir. • Nous désironsvenir à la fête.
