  4. Input Devices • Devices that allow you to put information into the computer: • Examples: • Keyboards, Mice, Microphones • Laser pens, Graphics Tablets • Scanners, OMRs, OCRs • Digital cameras, Webcams

  5. Keyboard • Suitable for: • Data entry • Typing documents • Not suitable for: • Drawing

  6. Mouse • Suitable for: • Selecting items • Highlighting text • Clicking buttons right button Viewing the context menu wheel scrolling left button Clicking, selecting, dragging

  7. Laser Pen and Graphics Tablet • Ideal for drawing light Pen graphics Tablet

  8. Scanner • Converts documents to digital images • Saves you from retyping • Must use OCR software if you want to edit the scanned text a flatbed scanner

  9. Digital Camera • Uses digital sensor instead of film • Stores images on flash memory • Images can be viewed right away LCD screen

  10. Webcam • Records low quality video • Used for: • Videoconferencing • Chatting

  11. Microphone • Like a normal microphone only smaller • Used for: • Videoconferencing • Chatting online • Recording audio • Giving voice commands

  12. Optical Mark Reader (OMR) • Reads pen and pencil marks on forms • Used for surveys and multiple-choice • Fast but gets confused by improper shading

  13. Optical Character Reader (OCR) • Reads characters in printed documents • Saves you from having to retype • Trouble reading low quality text • Used to read • Airline tickets • Envelopes • Printed bills

  14. Output Devices • Devices that allow you to get information out of the computer • Examples: • Monitors (Screens) • Speakers • Printers • Multimedia projectors

  15. Barcode Scanner • Used in supermarkets and retail stores • Identifies items by scanning barcodes • Computer system then retrieves prices • Faster and more accurate

  21. Inkjet Printer • Squirt tiny ink droplets on paper • High quality images and text • Prints quickly

  22. Laser Printer • Uses laser to fuse toner to paper • Fastest type of printer • Highest quality text • Expensive

  23. Dot-matrix Printer • Works almost like a typewriter • Uses inked ribbon • Slow and noisy • Can print in duplicate using carbon paper

  24. Thermal Printer • Applies heat to heat-sensitive paper • Low quality output • Cheap to operate • Used: • To print receipts and movie tickets • In some fax machines

  25. Impact and Non-Impact Printers • Impact printers: • Print by striking the paper • For example: dot-matrix • Non-impact printers: • Print using other means • For example: laser, inkjet, thermal

  26. Page Printers and Line Printers • Page printer: • Appears to print entire page at a time • For example: laser and inkjet printers • Line printer appears to print an entire line at a time

  27. Speakers • Produce audio output • Like normal speakers but smaller • Plug into the computer’s sound card

  28. Multimedia Projector • Connects to your PC • Uses lens to project images on to a wall or board • Used for presentations
