  1. Activities IEO Discard Bycatch Team throughout 2009 • Wide geographical coverage • Labs Vigo, Malaga, Murcia and Balearic • European waters and some extension to African waters • Technical and research work • Technical – DCR funds • IBDES project 2007-2009. Probably extended 2010-2013 • Research – EU and NCR funds among others • (New) REDES project (Tecnology & Gear Project) 2010-2013 • (New) FAROS project (Tecnology and Ecology Project) 2010-2013 • (New) BADMINTON (Ecology Project) Somewhere 2009-2012

  2. IBDES Project • Technical Project from DCR. • Main objective: To comply EU requirements • Contains basics from an observer program. • Deployment of observers • Sampling and “DCR” analysis • Source of data

  3. REDES Project, Nat, Funded • Partners: IEO (Spain), CETMAR (Spain), University Vigo (Spain), University Coruña (Spain), Skateholders & Fishing Sector Companies (13).

  4. FAROS Project – Life, funded • Integral Networking of Fishing Sector Actors to Organize a Responsible, Optimaland Sustainable Exploitation of Marine Resources (FAROS). • The main objective of the project is the development and implementation of an efficient and integraldiscards and by-catch management network, implying all actors present in the fishing sector (fleets, ports, auctions, industries, etc.) • Complete characterisation of the discards as raw material based on reuse and energy/massvalorisation potential. • Implementation of data based technologies on board to automate the catch compositionandtransmit data (position of the vessel and its activity, volume and composition of each throw, etc.) fromvessels to the central supervisory system. • Optimal networking of fleets and in land agents • Development of a decision making support system for assessing different reuse/valorisationscenarios under risk assessment and environmental impact criteria. • Demonstration of the developed actions by defining a global network in the geographic area ofVigo.

  5. FAROS Project – Life, funded • ACTION 1. Analysis and characterisation of the present discards situation on the target fisheries and fleets. • ACTION 2: Characterisation of the discards/raw material based on reuse and energy/massvalorisation potential. • ACTION 3. Implementation of data based technologies on board • ACTION 4. Optimal networking of fleets and in land agents. • ACTION 5: Development of a decision making support system for assessing differentreuse/valorisation scenarios under risk assessment and environmental impact criteria • Partners: CSIC-IIM (Spain), CETMAR (Spain), CSG (Spain), IPIMAR (Portugal), IEO (Spain), Autoridad Portuaria Vigo (Spain)

  6. Work Packages (WP) No. of WP Title 1 Descriptive analysis of discards and total catch in European waters 2 Indicators of catch and discards in European waters 3 Environmental and technical factors affecting discard patterns 4 Socio-economic and institutional incentives for discarding 5 Mitigation measures to reduce discards in European waters 6 Project Management and Co-ordination BADMINTON Project, MF WP8, Pending Nat Resolution • Develop the knowledge of discarding patterns and factors in European fisheries • Evaluate the efficacy of selective devices and other discard management measures that have been implemented in the past. • Improve methods to analyse, monitor, and manage bycatch and discarding in European fisheries.

  7. Future challenges • To survive all these projects • To be successful • More actions on two main research lines: • Gear technology • Spatial ecology • We are really open to collaborative actions as well as sharing actions and knowledge.
