Estuaries, where freshwater meets saltwater, create rich habitats that support diverse plant and animal life. This unique mixing, called brackish water, enhances nutrient availability, leading to twice the biological activity than in either ecosystem alone. Estuaries serve as crucial breeding and feeding grounds for various species. Salt marshes and mangroves are examples of vital estuarine ecosystems, with special adaptations to absorb moisture and endure harsh conditions. Understanding these interactions can help us protect these critical environments and their biodiversity.

Warm-up 10/15 • Since rivers, creeks, and streams are considered freshwater, and their main goal is to reach a larger body of water (i.e. oceans, which is salt water), predict what you think will happen to plant life and the ecosystem at the location where freshwater and saltwater meet.
Why is it so hard to find pure water on Earth? • ¾ of our planet covered in H2O, how much is salty?
But why can’t our water stay fresh… • Water is a solvent (it can dissolve other substances) • Water ranges from dissolving nutrients from rocks and soils to dissolving things such as gases in the air
Solvent – the liquid in which a substance is dissolved when a solution is formed • Ex1. Water (solvent) in saltwater lakes • Ex2. water (solvent) in Koolaid drink mix
Solute – the substance that is being dissolved when a solution is formed • Ex1. Salt (solute) in saltwater lakes • Ex2. Koolaid powder (solute) in Koolaid drink mix
Solution – a mixture of one or more substances with water that forms a clear, colored, or colorless liquid • Ex1. water (solvent) + salt (solute) = saltwater lake (solution) • Ex2. water (solvent) + Koolaid powder (solute) = Koolaid drink mix (solution)
solvent solute solution
Remember…. • Solutes dissolve in solvents to make a solution.
Estuaries have twice the life because 2 ecosystems are colliding
When freshwater and Saltwater meet… • Double the plant life!!!!! • Double the breeding & feeding
Fresh river & salt ocean water mix up with twice life & nutrients which benefit all.
Fresh water rivers run into salty coastal waters. Two big groups of life breed & feed in the tall grasses of our estuaries. • When salt & fresh water mix, it is called brackish.
