  2. Vocabulary Metabolism: • The process by which the body gets energy from food. RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance): • A guideline for the amount of each nutrient the body needs each day, based on gender and activity level.

  3. Cholesterol: • A waxy fat-like substance found in the cells of animals. (eggs, cheese, meat) LDL (Bad) Cholesterol • Builds up in arteries, blocking blood supply to the brain and heart (stroke or heart attack) HDL (Good) Cholesterol • Protects the arteries by removing plaque

  4. Calories: • Energy provided by the food we eat. Caloric Expenditure: • The amount of calories used/burned during daily activity. Sodium: • Salt=Too much can lead to high blood pressure Dehydration: • Excessive lack of body fluids

  5. Essential Daily Nutrients Carbohydrates • Nutrient, including sugars and starches. • Gives the body it’s main source of energy. • 4 calories per gram

  6. Protein • Nutrient that comes from plants or animals. • Important for growth and repair of the body. • 4 calories per gram

  7. Fats • Warmth, storage, absorption of vitamins. • High source of energy, but last to be used. • Saturated fats are from animals = clotted arteries. • 9 calories per gram

  8. Serving Size • 1 serving = 1 fist = 1 cup Cereal, pasta, veggies, or fruit • 1 serving = 1 palm = 3 ounces Meat, fish, or poultry • 1 serving = 1 thumb = 1 ounce Cheese • 1 serving = 1 thumb tip = 1 teaspoon Peanut butter, butter, mayo, or sugar • 1 serving= 1 or 2 handfuls = 1 ounce Snack foods, chips, candy, pretzels
