  2. Sentence Structure • Helps vary your sentence length and syntax so all your sentences aren’t the same type and length when you write • Four Types • Simple • Compound • Complex • Compound-Complex

Simple Sentence Structure • Has one independent clause (IC) & no dependent clauses (DC) • Simple doesn’t necessarily mean they are uncomplicated • They may contain many different phrases or grammatical structures in the one IC Example: Q and Mr. Briscoe, two male teachers at PFHS, have kids and enjoy spending time with them.

Compound Sentence Structure • Two or more independent clauses (IC) • ICs are joined together by: • Comma (,) + coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) • Semicolon (;) • Semicolon (;) + conjunctive adverb (however, although, therefore) • They do not contain any dependent clauses (DC) Example: Harry Potter is a great selling book, yet the movie may be even more successful. IC IC

  5. Complex Sentence Structure • One independent clause (IC) • One or more dependent clauses (DC) Example: Even though he is a successful rapper, Kanye West is not the best hip hop artist of all time. DC IC

  6. Compound-Complex Sentence Structure • Two or more independent clauses (IC) • One or more dependent clauses (DC) Example: We haven’t had a lot of rain this fall; therefore the leaves are brighter in color because water keeps plants green. IC IC DC
