Pharaohs • Pharaohs: Kings of Ancient Egypt • Considered a god as well as a political and military leader. • Almost as powerful as the gods of the heavens. • Theocracy: a government in which the ruler is viewed as a divine figure. • Pharaoh stood at the center of Egypt’s religion, government and army, believed full responsibility of the kingdom well being.
Pyramids • Egyptians believed that kings ruled even after there death. • Lead to tombs being more important than their palaces. • Pyramids: Massive structure with a rectangular base and four triangular sides.
Pyramid of Giza • Perfectly cut stone blocks weighed at least 2.5 tons each. • More than 2 million blocks stacked with precision to height of 281 feet. • Covered an area of more than 13 acres. • Built by Khufu and Cheops
Egyptian Religion • Polytheistic: Belief in many gods. • Ra: The Sun God • Osiris God of the Dead • Isis was the goddess of the ideal mother and wife. • Worshipped more than 2,000 gods and goddesses. • Built temples to honor the major deities.
Egyptian Afterlife • Believed in an afterlife. Judged for their deeds when they died. • Anubis: God and guide of the underworld would weight each dead person’s heart. • Heart had to weigh less than a feather, or soul was devourer.
Mummification • Royal and elite Egyptians’ bodies were preserved by mummification. • Mummification: Embalming and drying the corpse to prevent it from decaying. • Mummies would be placed in coffin inside a tomb filled with items the dead person could use in the afterlife.
