Purpose of the APRN Uniformity Act Toolkit • To support your efforts in reaching out to your state legislators and/or candidates during this election year. • To support efforts in reaching out to your employer. • Provide the informational materials provided on this website that can be shared during your meetings with legislators or employer. • Reminder to keep your association representation informed of meetings.

  3. APRN Scope of Practice depends on legislation that supports the removal of the barriers to practice to the fullest extent of license. Laws influence any one of the areas described below. Nursing Scope of Practice is comprised of laws, employer policies and competency Competency: Education Training & Experience Laws & Regulations Employer Policies

  4. Grassroots Advocacy • Is a Call to Action! It is a message coming from your professional association asking you to contact your elected officials or candidates to support the passage of the APRN Uniformity Act. • Benefit: Raise awareness that you as a constituent and APRN are concerned about lack of patient access to timely health care. • Communicate: Your position, the reason why and ask for support of your position.

  5. APRN as Grassroots Advocate • The goal is to inform and influence your legislator’s decision to support the APRN Uniformity Act legislation. • Activity Formally meet with your legislator or legislative candidate to educate him/her on the issue. • Introduce yourself and your practice. • Describe APRN practice and the various roles using talking points • Provide copy of the talking points (Fact Sheets) • Provide copy of legislative overview

Tips for Legislator Communication • Introduce yourself and where you live • You are his/her constituent • Describe your nursing and APRN background • Communication – must be very clear • Provide rationale for your position • Describe how it impacts your patients, community or population – provide a personal story if you can • Clarify any questions

Tips for Legislator Communication • Specifically ask if he/she will support your position • Let the legislator know that you are available for any further questions or any questions on health care related legislation. • Thank him/her for their time and consideration of your request • Provide APRN Talking Points and Summary of Legislation • Provide your contact information

Supporting Your Legislator • Congratulate your legislator on honors received or elections won. • Thank him/her. • Offer to be the resource on healthcare issues, and provide information from time to time. • Attend fundraisers and make contribution! • If willing: Assist with election campaign • Work on door-to-doorcampaigns • Post campaign materials in social media • Sites and home. • Help mail campaign materials.

Employer Outreach and Support • The goal is to inform and influence your employer to support the APRN Uniformity Act as a good business and quality patient care decision. • Activity Formally meet with your employer to educate him/her on the issue and impact on business. • Introduce yourself and your practice. • What you bring to support the patients and the organization. • How can efficiencies and effectiveness be maximized. • Provide copy of the talking points • Provide copy of legislative overview (Fact sheets)

  10. Employer Outreach and Support • Find out what employer needs to support decision. • Establish next steps • Identify what you can do to support efforts • Meeting with others • Outcome data • Costs data

  11. Keep your association in the loop • Notify your association representative of pending meeting, he/she may want to join you. • Provide a summary of the meeting including degree of interest. • Notify if you are going to work on campaign.

Lawmakers need to hear from us. We need to be the voice of reason and advocate for accessible, effective and quality care for the people of Wisconsin. Changes to our Nurse Practice Act can achieve the “Triple Aim” for health care today and the future.
