  2. Why is it practiced • It seeks to guide the student to infer more often. • Pushes students to go beyond literal interpretation • Encourages students to link words they find in the reading to their conclusions revolving around the text.

  3. What Students Stand to Benefit? • It helps students who have a history of reading without real comprehension. • Example- If said he read five chapters of “ Lord of the Flies,” yet when asked to give a report he talks about Superhuman insects taking over the world.

  4. Looking at overarching question • What is intelligent life?

  5. How It Works -Read the passage and try to pick out key words that can lead the reader to infer something about the article and the characters within it.

  6. It Says • What point is the text/writer trying to drive home? • Who is telling the story?

  7. I Say • Here the writer uses the wording in the text and expands on its ideas. • Finding the the tone of the text? • What type of language is used? • Formulate a conclusion independent of the one given before. • Look at the piece from different angles to gain a wider perspective.

  8. And So…. • Create a conclusion based on reading the text and inferring what it says. • Combine the two
