  7. Safety – First Aid • Caring for hypothermia: • Get Ski Patrol involved ASAP – the person needs advanced medical attention • Gently move the person to a warm place • Remove wet clothing and dry the person • Warm the body gradually • Wrap in blankets • Keep the head covered • Position the person near a heat source • If the person is alert, give warm liquids (no alcohol or caffeine) Shared Ski Adventures A Program of CP Rochester Instructor Training Dec 2012

  9. Safety - Behavior • Negative behavior typically arises because a need is not being met • Can be affected by communication challenges • Mood/patience can be affected by: • Feeling ill, tired, discomfort/pain, or having a medication change • Prevention is the best way to keep a student from becoming frustrated • What to ask the parent on Day 1: • Signs the student gives when he/she is becoming frustrated • Triggers that might aggravate the student (physical touch, sounds, smells) • The student’s preferred way to communicate Shared Ski Adventures A Program of CP Rochester Instructor Training Dec 2012

  10. Safety - Behavior Keeping your student happy or “balanced” • What motivates your student? • Why does he want to learn to ski/snowboard? • Is she competitive?  set goals at the beginning of each lesson • Is he sensory-driven?  after # of runs, take a “sensory break” or use the time on the chairlift for sensory time • What is your student’s strongest learning style? • Music / Numbers / Words / Social, People / Physical … • Take breaks • For short attention spans, incorporate breaks into lesson time • Snacks and water/hot cocoa are available in the Cocoa hut • End the lesson on a positive note – before your student is exhausted Shared Ski Adventures A Program of CP Rochester Instructor Training Dec 2012

Safety - Behavior • When things don’t go well… • Priority: make sure the student is safe • If the student is unsafe on the slopes, notify Ski Patrol to get assistance • Take steps to minimize risk of injury to the student and to yourself • Notify an SSA Coordinator and the parent • Stay calm! • Follow up: • Try to identify the trigger(s) leading up to the behavior • Check in with the parent to see if they can help ID the issue Shared Ski Adventures A Program of CP Rochester Instructor Training Dec 2012
