Antarctic Ozone Hole Snapshot Series

Explore a series of snapshots capturing the Antarctic ozone through the years, focusing on the day the Ozone Hole reaches its deepest point. White sections indicate data gaps. Despite some variations, the Ozone Hole typically reappears annually with consistent size, shape, and depth. An anomaly occurred in 2002 due to a weak stratospheric vortex, while 2003 and 2004 showed "normal" behavior.

  1. This is a series of snapshots of Antarctic ozone, through the years, on the day that the Ozone Hole is at its deepest. White sections of the map are areas where there are no data from the satellite.

  2. Each year the Ozone Hole reappears at roughly the same size, shape and depth.

  3. Each year the Ozone Hole reappears at roughly the same size, shape and depth.

  4. Each year the Ozone Hole reappears at roughly the same size, shape and depth.

  5. Each year the Ozone Hole reappears at roughly the same size, shape and depth.

  6. Each year the Ozone Hole reappears at roughly the same size, shape and depth.

  7. 2002 was an exceptional year when the vortex in the stratosphere around the South Pole was very weak and the conditions that cause ozone depletion did not persist.

  8. In 2003 and 2004 the vortex seemed to be behaving "normally", consequently the Ozone Hole was as extensive as normal.

  9. In 2003 and 2004 the vortex seemed to be behaving "normally", consequently the Ozone Hole was as extensive as normal.
