  1. QXF cable insulation at CERN Paolo Ferracin, Jorge Munoz Garcia, Laura Garcia Fajardo, Jacky Mazet Joint LARP/CM20 HiLumi meeting Napa Valley, CA, USA 8-10 April, 2013

  2. By J. Munoz Garcia Strand: a compact bundle of filaments (≈Ø10µm), usually twisted together to give yarns (the twist is just added to add strand integrity and could be ‘Z’ or ‘S’) braided insulation Tex: unit of linear density = mass in grams of 1000m of yarn: yarns Example of tex measure: 20tex x 3(3 bundles of 20g/1000m each) in 2 ‘Z’ strands, into a ‘S’ yarn 636 or 933 RMC/FRESCA Cu cable and insulation S-Grade glass fibre sleeving (66tex) braided around Cu cable 20.9x1.86mm (without keystone) yarns TE-MSC-MDT 2 | 2013 Jorge Enrique MUÑOZ GARCIA

  3. Braiding technique at CGP Paolo Ferracin • 32 bobbins • 4 yarns (ply?) per bobbin • Speed (angle) set to guarantee full coverage

  4. By J. Munoz Garcia The cables are superimposed alternatively to compensate the cable keystone (if any), thus forming rectangular 10-units stacks: 10-stack specimen 10 units 10 units polyimide (kapton) insulated 10-stack specimen braided (fiber-glass) insulated 10-stack specimen bare cable 10-stack specimen MQXC cable 11T 33tex RMC/FRESCA Cu TE-MSC-MDT 4 | 2013 Jorge Enrique MUÑOZ GARCIA

  10. Next steps Paolo Ferracin • QXF Cu cable has been insulated in different braiding configurations • 2 and 3 yarns per bobbin • Different speed (angles) • Preliminary results (calliper measurements) • ~150 micron with 70-90% coverage • QXF Cu cable ten-stack fabrication and measurements on-going • In parallel, FRESCA2 reacted cable ten-stack measurements • Good evaluation of effect of heat treatment • Second iteration on QXF Cu cable • Second week of May • To be discussed: what about 33TEX with 636 sizing?
