  4. EMI Sources of EMI electromagnetic interference Above figure shows possible sources of EMI in the normal residential or business building (industrial plants will have even more). Equipment using electrical motors; i.e. air conditioners, office equipment, refrigerators, furnace, heat pump, power tools, and even light dimmers, motor speed controls, electric blanket controls are sources for EMI Page 4

  5. NPX_ series Safety Capacitors X1andX2 type safety capacitors (corresponding to IEC664 categories I, II), are designed to operate “across the line” in order to filter electromagnetic interference, i.e. bursts and noise, from the AC line grid. In North American this is connection between Line (L) and Neutral (N), in Europe between L1 and L2. X type safety capacitors must withstand the stress of the AC line voltage and withstand electromagnetic interference (EMI), so component robustness and stability to high withstanding voltage is key requirement. X type safety capacitors are commonly used to filter differential-mode* type EMI • Requirements: • Stability under VAC operation (High VAC ratings) • Safety agency listings (UL, cUL, ENEC, CQC) • Safe end of life failure mode *- Differential-mode interference is a signal that appears on two lines of a closed loop, but current flow is in opposite directions. This kind of interference essentially appears in series with the desired signal. The solution is an inductor in series with the high side (and/or low side) of the line and a shunt capacitor (X type) across the lines. [Electronic Design; June 25, 2009] Page 5

  6. NPX_ series X type Safety Capacitors X1 used in higher peak impulse – pulse applications - INTERNATIONAL STANDARD IEC 60384-14 Fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment – Part 14: / Sectional specification: Fixed capacitors for electromagnetic interference suppression and connection to the supply mains X1, X2 & X3 upgrade X2 is the most popular X class capacitor Page 6

  7. NPX_ series Safety Capacitors Y type safety capacitors are designed for use in line – bypass applications, with connection between Line(L) or Neutral (N) and Ground (G) in North America, and between L-1 or L2 and Ground in Europe. Y type safety capacitors include four sub-classifications, Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4 as defined by EN132400, with Y2 being most commonly called out. Y type safety capacitors are commonly used to filter common mode* type EMI • Requirements: • High Dielectric Strength: • Withstand 2000 VAC or 4000 VDC (2 seconds) • Safety agency listings (UL, cUL, ENEC, CQC) • Safe end of life failure mode *- A common-mode EMI signal appears on the two signal lines simultaneously in the same direction and phase. The signal on each line returns through a common ground. The solution (to reducing common mode EMI) , is use of a common-mode choke, produces equal and opposite magnetic fields that cancel one another. A (Y type) capacitor from each line to ground is also used. [Electronic Design; June 25, 2009] Page 7

  9. NPX_ series Potential Equipment Applications using Safety Capacitors • Power supplies • Industrial equipment • Motor controls & drives • HVAC equipment • Pump controllers • Smart grid (metering) • Security & alarm • Office equipment • Power tools • Networking Safety Capacitors Safety Capacitor Usage TIP – Likely used if equipment has a motor or is connected to AC line close to a motor Page 9

  10. NPXH series NPXH series – X2 Safety Film Capacitors NIC Components is pleased to announce the addition of NPXH series of X2 class Safety Capacitors to its expanded family of radial leaded (LDD) high performance film capacitors. NPXH series expands upon the established NPX series, with extended capacitance value range from 1000pF to 10uF, and higher operating voltage ratings of 300V, 310V & 330VAC. NPXH is intended for use as interference suppression capacitors, used across the AC line and neutral in North America, and L1 to L2 in Europe, to suppress differential-mode interference (EMI). NPXH series utilizes metallized polypropylene film with non-inductive & self-healing wound element construction, for stability under VAC operation, and safe end of life failure mode. NPXH series has safety agency listings with UL, cUL, ENEC, CQC for use in across-the-line, radio interference, and EMI suppression applications. Molded box type construction meets UL-94V-0 flammability test, and is supported in reduced case sizes, for high density circuit designs. NPXH is RoHS compliant, with Pb-Free finish, is supplied in bulk or tape and box (TB) packaging and has unit pricing ranging from $0.05 to $2.49 in production volumes. 11. NPXF series NPXFseries – X1 Safety Capacitors NIC Components is pleased to announce the addition of NPXF series of X1 class Safety Capacitors to its expanded family of leaded (LDD) high performance safety agency listed film capacitors. NPXF series expands upon the established NPX & NPXH series of X2 safety capacitors, with higher voltage rating; up to 440VAC, in capacitance value range, from 1000pF to 10uF. NXPF series is intended for use as interference suppression capacitor, used across the AC line and neutral in North America, and L1 to L2 in Europe to suppress differential-mode interference (EMI) NPXF series utilizes metallized polypropylene film with non-inductive & self-healing wound element construction, for stability under VAC operation, and safe end of life failure mode. NPXF series has safety agency listings with UL, cUL, ENEC, CQC for use in across-the-line, radio interference, EMI suppression applications. Molded box type construction meets UL-94V-0 flammability test, and is supported in reduced case sizes, for high density circuit designs. NPXF is RoHS compliant, with Pb-Free finish, and has unit pricing ranging from $0.06 to $x.xx (TBA) in production volumes. 12. NPYT series NPYTseries – Y2 Safety Film Capacitors NIC Components is pleased to announce the addition of NPYT series of Y2 class Safety Capacitors to its expanded family of leaded (LDD) high performance film capacitors. NPXH series expands upon the NIC established X class of safety capacitors, with capacitance value range of 1000pF to 0.1uF with 330VAC voltage rating for use, connected between Line(L) or Neutral (N) and Ground (G) in North America, and between L-1 or L2 and Ground in Europe, to suppress common mode interference (EMI). NPYT series utilizes metallized polypropylene film with non-inductive & self-healing wound element construction, for stability under VAC operation, and safe end of life failure mode. Y class capacitors suppress common-mode noise (EMI) produced by the equipment, preventing the escape of EMI, via the AC line, to connected equipment. Y class capacitors protect users from electrical shock potential, so component reliability is a key requirement. NPYT series has safety agency listings with UL, cUL, ENEC, CQC for use in line – bypass applications. Molded box type construction meets UL-94V-0 flammability test. NPXH is RoHS compliant, with Pb-Free finish, and has unit pricing ranging from $0.06 to $0.15 in production volumes.
