  2. Get out of the wrong side of the bed • 一早情绪就不好 • He must have got out of the wrong side today, because he has shouted at everybody in the office.

  3. Get someone’s goat • 惹某人生气 • What got my goat was the way she kept laughing at my mistakes.

  4. Get the sack • 被解雇 • You’ll get the sack if you keep dropping in here when I’m supposed to be working.

  5. Give someone the cold shoulder • 轻视某人,不理睬某人 • We keep getting the cold shoulder from our neighbours these days, because of the argument we had last week.

  6. Give the thumbs down • 反对 • My father turned thumbs down on our plan to travel during the summer vacation.

  7. Go like a house on fire • To go very quickly or well • I didn’t like him at first but now I get on with him like a house on fire.

  8. Haul over the coals • 严厉责斥 • He hauled me over the coals for borrowing his car again.

  9. Have frog in one’s throat • 声音沙哑 • It’s just that I often get a frog in my throat in the morning.

  10. In apple-pie order • In neat order; with everything in its right place • I always put my desk in the apple-pie order every evening.

  11. In the doghouse • 失宠,受羞辱 • Our neighbour got in the doghouse with his wife by coming home drunk.

  12. Keep one’s fingers crossed • To wish or hope for success or good luck • I hope everything will be all right – we must just keep our fingers crossed.

  13. Kill the goose that lays the golden eggs • 杀鸡取卵 • That would be killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

  14. Know the ropes • 熟悉,了如指掌 • He has been here for several months. I think he should know the ropes.

  15. Let the cat out of the bag • 泄密 • We wanted to surprise Delia with a birthday gift, but Juliet let the cat out of the bag by asking her what she would like.
