  1. EYFS Meeting for Parents End of Transition September 2014

  2. A BIG Thank you for your support through the transition to school process – One-to-one Meetings back in May, Transition Week in the Summer term Part time sessions over the first two weeks. It has been extremely successful. We appreciate how difficult it can be organising who is bringing and collecting your child during these sessions but I think you will agree how successful it has been in settling in the children. Could I also thank Grandparents and other family members in this too?

  3. What am I going to talk about today? • What is the EYFS? What will your children be learning? • Parental Support – Home/School book, reading, phonics, maths. • Messages from the Teachers. • Questions

  4. Who is working with your children? • R1 – Mrs Day/Mrs Taylor – support from Mrs Glover and Mrs Snow. • R2 – Mrs Priestley – support from MrsAkrill and MrsCains-Smith • R3 – Mrs Lawton – support from MrsCains-Smith and MrsHewitson Mrs Thomas and Mrs Day also work throughout Reception to cover teachers Planning and Preparation time and Management time

EYFS • Revised Curriculum began in September 2013. • Reduced to 7 areas of learning from 6! • Prime Areas- Personal Social Emotional development, Physical Development, Communication and Language. • Specific Areas – Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World, Expressive Art and Design • See Booklet on the Foundation Stage page of the school website. http://www.barrowhall.co.uk/foundation-stage/

  6. Parental SupportHow can you help? • Home/School book – photographs, leaflets, collections, writing, drawings. It is NOT a competition. • Reading books – sharing the book several times. Reading isn’t just about reading the words but talking together about the topic/theme in the book, talking about the stories, children handling the book turning the pages etc. See reading support www.barrowhall.co.uk - School Information, Curriculum, Literacy

Reading • Watch Michael Rosen talking about Bedtime reading https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azRDNDQUjSk • Watch Tips for Reading with children https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QVfbYvPaAM • Encourage “Reading for Pleasure” – talk to the children about when you are reading – the newspaper, a magazine, a recipe, instructions for something you have bought, signs and posters etc • Quality reading time rather than quantity. We don’t want to turn the children off.

Phonics • Phonics – Letters and Sounds and Jolly Phonics • Phase 1started in Nursery/Pre-school – listening to sounds in the environment, repeating sounds – clapping, musical instruments, words that rhyme, alliteration, Oral Blending and Segmenting. • Phase 2– teaching phonemes (letter sounds) – s a t p in m dg o c k cke u rh b f, ff l, llsshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqhXUW_v-1s(Watch for the correct articulationof the phonemes) • Starting to blend phonemes – a-s = as, i-t = it, c-a-t = cat, d-o-g = dog • Starting to segment – as= a-s, it = i-t, cat = c-a-t, dog = d-o-g • Teaching Tricky Words – I, go, to, no, the

Phonics • Phase 3 – the expected level by the end of Reception • j v w x y z, zzqu • chshthng • ai, ee, igh, oa, oo (as in boot & look), ar, or, ur, ow (as in cow), oi, ear, air, er, ure • Reading and writing words using these phonemes. • Teaching Tricky words - he, she, we, me, be, was, my, you, her, they, all, are; • See sheet for more details for Phases 1-5.

  10. Maths • Practical fun activities. • Counting objects, ordering and recognising numbers to at least 20. (Not just saying the numbers in order 0,1,2,3,4..) • In practical activities add and take away objects. • Counting forwards and backwards and saying 1 more or 1 less than a number to 20. • Solving problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. • Have a look at http://www.pinterest.com/nadinehoward/early-years-mathematics/

  11. Children’s Planner • Child’s Planner • Please write a comment when you have shared their reading book or a story book with your child. (Remember, don’t over do it but we would like to know the children’s favourite books and authors) • Pass a message on to say who is collecting your child if it is someone different. (or phone on the day if necessary) • To pass on other quick messages or to request an appointment with your child’s teacher if you require a meeting. • They are checked daily but we encourage the children to hand in their book.

  12. Messages From the Teachers • Please make sure your child has a waterproof coat everyday . • Uniform – earrings and nail varnish are not part of our uniform. • PE Kits in school in a small bag. Please make sure your child’s name is on the bag on the outside. • Names on everything. • Please visit your child’s class page – www.barrowhall.co.uk - Classes, Foundation Stage and then your child’s class. Foundation Stage newsletter once per Month. • PLEASE ask if you are unsure about anything • You will find everything discussed today on the Foundation Stage Page of the school website.
