Context • Need for improvement in care quality and nursing staffing levels • Development of a nursing recruitment and retention plan • Development of a workforce and education strategy and investment of £70k • Setting standards and expectations • What’s available and what’s appropriate for HCAs?

What We Did • Focus on ward based fundamental care • A cohort for practice change (at least 4 per ward) • Care of the patient with dementia • Flexible learning but structured programme • Full study leave but on site • Two cohorts – library based and IT skills • - reflective practice • Practice development team support • Ward sister as mentor

  4. What Happened • Practice and patient care impact? • Recruitment effect • Individual benefit and growth • IT skills • OU 4th November 2013 celebration • 43 out of 49 completed

  5. What Next? • Formal evaluation • Dementia cohort 2 pre April 2013 • End of Life care post April 2013 • Why?

  6. Lessons and Questions • Build in support – flexibility and structure • What’s appropriate? • Career structure, development and education • Or not?
