On the authority of Abu 'Abd al-Rahman 'Abdullah bin 'Umar bin al-Khattab, radiyallahu 'anhuma, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, say: "Islam has been built upon five things - on testifying that there is no god save Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger; on performing salah; on giving the zakah; on Hajj to the House; and on fasting during Ramadhan." [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]

  3. Nisab The payment of Zakat is obligatory on every adult, free Muslim who owns property to the extent of the prescribed rate called Nisab, provided it remained in his ownership for full one year.

  4. Nisab/Rate of Zakat Amount: 7.5 tolas or 87.48 grams Zakat payable: 2.5% Amount: 52.5 tolas or 612.36 grams Zakat payable: 2.5% Amount: Equivalent to the value of 52.5 tolas of silver Zakat Payable: 2.5%

  5. Produce from Mines Khums or 1/5 or 20% of the produce.

  6. Agriculture Term used: Ushr Irrigated by rain: 1/10 or 10% of the produce Artificially irrigated: 1/20 or 5% of the Produce

  7. Trade Items 2.5% of the total value

  8. For every 40 sheep/goats – 1 sheep/goat • From 121 to 200 – 2 sheep/goat • Then for every 100 – 1 sheep/goat

  9. on 30 to 40 cattle – 1 calf of 1 year • Then on every 40 cattle – a 2 year old calf

  10. Distribution of Zakat

  11. 1. People who are poor and do not possess wealth equal to Nisab.

  12. 2. Extremely poor people who are forced to beg for food

  13. 3. Those people who are appointed by an Islamic Head of State or government to collect Zakat.

  14. 4. Those who have recently accepted Islam and are in need of basic necessities of life.

  15. 5. Slaves who want to purchase their freedom from their masters.

  16. 6. People in debt who are unable to repay loans.

  17. 7. In the way of Allah

  18. 8. Travellers who may be well to do at home, but are short of basic necessities during their journey.
