Lessons Under watershed and environmental management significant efforts have been made in the 5th year of the project. Within this budget year the major lesson learned are: • The implementation of participatory monitoringsystem has created interest and sense of ownership among the communities.
Lessons cont’d • Capacity building focusing on the communityhelps to ensure sustainability. E.g. • Experience sharing tourhas significantly changed the attitudes of most farmers on the implementation of watershed management. • Frequent visitsencouraged farmers and experts to carry on the already established monitoring/follow up system on watershed management
Lessons cont’d • Mainstreaming environment in small scale projects minimizes/avoids significant impacts and ultimately ensures sustainability. E.g. in Goncha woreda impacts that can be resulted from wrong site selection for hand dug wells were avoided through environmental mainstreaming.
Challenges faced during the 5th year • Woreda offices’ & DAs’ focus was on the number of new watersheds not on successful implementation • Heavy workload on DAs & woreda experts with other activities has affected watershed implementation & reporting. • High staff turnoverespecially in the 3rd quarter of the year at woreda level
Opportunities realized in the 5th year • The commitment shown by the communityin terms of interest towards watershed development activities. • Government has given special attention to watershed management • The positive results observed (grass, trees, ground water potential, etc.) in these model watersheds in a short time has encouraged farmers
6th year watershed implementation strategies Implementation strategies are the following: • Work more closely with PSNP particularly woreda coordinators • Implementing participatory monitoring system on watershed developments by the community, woreda, and zone offices
Implementation strategies cont’d • Building the capacity of the community through: experience sharing tours, farmers field days & workshops, etc. • Assist zone offices to periodically monitor/follow upwatershed developments with woreda offices.
Implementation strategies cont’d • Enforce EIA procedures particularlyin water resource developments through the application of guidelines, awareness raising workshops and trainings, etc. • Work to apply IEEchecklists at woredas and zone offices or • Assist woreda offices in the implementation of EMMP for selected projects
Implementation strategies cont’d • Work in collaboration with other SWHISA groupse.g. • WHG in implementing HDWs/HHWHs, springs within the watershed and • CDE in building the capacity of the community on watershed developments respectively • Identifying and scaling up successful lessons
Implementation strategies cont’d • Performanceindicators can be collected through field visit/observation, direct measurement/GPS, beneficiary interviews and reports. • From this, expected results and effects would be obtained and analyzed accordingly
