Beginning of colonialism • 35 000 years ago – from Asiathrough Bering Strait – Native Americans • 1000 y. ago – Icelandic Vikings, no permanent settlements • October 12, 1492 – Christopher Columbus (Columbia District) • ships: the Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria – the Bahamas Islands  • Amerigo Vespucci (America) • the New World = a colonial land for Western Europeans (wealthy land, religion, new life – fur, corn, potatoes, tobacco)

  7. War of Independence 1775 – 1783 • France, Spain war with England • lost battles – N.Y., Philadelphia  decisive battle at Saratoga 1777 English capitulated • 1783 Peace Treaty in Paris – only Canada left to England

  9. American Constitution • 1788 • based on Declaration of Ind., the supreme law of the USA, the oldest written constitution • 1 Preamble, 7 Articles, 27 Ammendments (10= The Bill of Rights) • 1789 • first president elected: • George Washington (1732 – 1799)
