Beginning of colonialism • 35 000 years ago – from Asiathrough Bering Strait – Native Americans • 1000 y. ago – Icelandic Vikings, no permanent settlements • October 12, 1492 – Christopher Columbus (Columbia District) • ships: the Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria – the Bahamas Islands  • Amerigo Vespucci (America) • the New World = a colonial land for Western Europeans (wealthy land, religion, new life – fur, corn, potatoes, tobacco)
