  2. Outline • What is Blu-Ray Disk? • Blu-Ray Disk Capabilities • Blu-Ray Disk Structure • Formats Used • Blu-Ray Disk Types • Conclusion

  3. What is Blu-Ray Disk? • It is an optical disc storage media format. • Its main uses are high-definition video and data storage. • The disc has the same dimensions as a standard DVD or CD. • Uses a 405nm blue laser to read/write data. • Blu-ray Disc was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association.

  4. Blu-Ray Disk Capabilities • HD video recording. • More recording time for standard video. • High storage capacity: • 25GB (single layer) • 50GB (double layer)

  5. Blu-Ray Disk Structure

  6. Blu-Ray Disk Structure • Hard Coating • More pits • Smaller pit lengths • Smaller track pitch • Data on top of poly-layer prevents the birefringence problem

  7. Formats Used • There are basically three formats used: • MPEG-2 • MPEG-4 AVC (known as H.264) • VC-1

  8. Blu-Ray Disk Types • 25GB Type (single layer): • BD-ROM (read-only) -for pre-recorded content • BD-R (recordable) - for PC data storage • BD-RW (rewritable) - for PC data storage • BD-RE (rewritable) - for HDTV recording • Mini-BD (7.5 GB) – 8cm diameter • BD9 / BD5 (lower capacity type) - 8152MB BD9, 4489MB BD5

  9. Conclusion • Big advancement in the disk storage technology. • Overthrew the HD-DVD technology. • Possible setback: high price disc+writer

  10. I’ll be happy to answer any questions Thank you for listening

  11. CD Scratches • Problem: • Scratches make the laser divert and hence you cannot read the disk. • Solution: • Try cleaning it first; dirtiness could be the cause. • Repair the disk by applying some solution on the surface. • If nothing works, try to prevent it from being scratched in the first place.
