  5. How to access EndNote • University of Manchester has a site license • Available on Cluster PCs (Version 9) • Schools have to obtain the software from ITS CompShop • Off-site license is £55 + VAT + postage (available from Adept Science)

  6. Uses of EndNote • Storing, organising and formatting references • Importing references from bibliographic databases • Creating a bibliography using the link with Word • Searching bibliographic databases

  7. Organising references • Create your own database of references - called an EndNote Library (.enl files) • References can be formatted using Output Styles • Libraries are searchable • Each library can contain unlimited references • Customisable

  8. EndNote Library

  9. EndNote Record (journal article)

  10. Importing References to EndNote • Manually • Direct Export from some databases (eg Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus) • Importing text files from databases using Import Filters • Using Connection Files to connect, search and retrieve references (- limited search facilities)

  11. Direct Typing • In EndNote click Reference, New • Select Reference Type (article, book, chapter, report etc) • Types details in the appropriate field (author, title, year etc)

  12. Direct Export from Web of Science • Do a search on the Web of Science • Mark the articles of interest • Select the fields you want to out put • Click on Export to Reference software

  13. Importing References Using Import Filters • Import filters allow you to import references from databases • Have to save the data as a text file • Each database uses a different import filter • Shows EndNote how to interpret the imported text file

  14. Saving a text file on Medline

  15. Importing a text file

  16. Import Filter Manager

  17. Importing to EndNote using Connection Files • Use File and Connect to connect to a database using a connection file • Limited search facilities compared to the database’s own search engine • results then imported (transferred) into a library • Connection File Manager lists available connections

  18. Choosing a Connection File

  19. Creating bibliographies • Link between EndNote and Word ( see Tools menu) • Cite while you write feature - inserts a citation directly into a Word document • Formatting bibliographies using output styles (eg Harvard)

  20. Formatting your bibliography using Output Styles • In Word select Tools, Endnote, Format Bibliography • Choose the required Output Style from the list • If not there select from EndNote Output Style Manager -1400 styles • Or you can create your own style

  21. Format Bibliography

  22. Output Style Manager

  23. Finding an Output Style • In EndNote choose Edit, Output Styles, Open Style Manager • Select the required style from the list • Click on Show Preview to preview the style • EndNote website has a searchable database of styles

  24. What if I have an existing database of references? • A conversion utility is available for Papyrus 6 and 7 on EndNote web site • ProCite and Reference manager files can be opened directly in EndNote (choose Openfrom the file menu) • BibTex import utility available on the EndNote web site • Conversion utilities for other programs can be downloaded from the Endnote web site

  25. Importing a tab-delimited /tagged file • References lists in Access, Excel, etc can be saved as a tab-delimited file and imported • Data must be prepared first • References in Word must be saved in Tagged format • Often easier to cut and paste

  26. Recommendations • Keep the imported text files in case of import errors • Only use one version of EndNote to edit • Only have one library • Backup your EndNote Library regularly

  27. Features of EndNote 8 onwards • Unicode support - multilingual text, symbols and other technical characters • Unlimited size of libraries • Capacity to store larger records

  28. Other features • Can attach image files to records (.bmp, .tif, .gif) • Can attach application files to records • EndNote provides pre-formatted templates for use with Word for submission to journals

  29. EndNote 9 features • Increased performance – faster • More connection files, styles etc • Improved multi-language support • Easier to share libraries • NB version 8 and 9 are directly compatible

  30. Further Help • Academic Liaison Librarian • Faculty IT Support Desk • Library EndNote web pages • EndNote Manual – PDF • Online EndNote course on WebCT • Endnote - http://www.endnote.com • AdeptScience - http://www.adeptscience.co.uk
