  1. Opportunities in the Colorado Photonics Cluster October 2016 Annual Meeting

  2. The Colorado Photonics Cluster • Overview of Private Sector • Many organizations in the cluster support the success of the private sector. • Many new companies spin out of University research. • Data Provided by Gary Horvath • (funding from CPIA and CDLE) Colorado Photonics Cluster

  3. Enabling Technology Photonics is an enabling technology that creates opportunity and advancements in industries such as aerospace, biomedical devices, and computers. Photonics is a lot like Rodney Dangerfield, it doesn’t get the respect it deserves. For example, NASA recently announced that the Kepler space telescope has allowed scientists to discover 1,284 planets outside of our solar system. That discovery was made possible by photonics!

  4. Photonics In Colorado

  5. Cool Colorado Photonics Achieve National Recognition • Boulder Nonlinear Systems(BNS) received the S.P.I.E. 2016 Prism Award for Photonics Innovation in the category of “Optics and Optical Components” to recognize development of multi-stage Liquid Crystal Polarization Gratings (LCPGs) for non-mechanical beam steering (March 2016). • Double Helixwon the grand prize in the SPIE Startup Challenge with its 3D nanoscale imaging system that can image at the single-molecule level inside individual cells (February 2016). University Spin Out • Double Helixselected as a finalist in the OSA Enabled by Optics Contest for 3D super-resolution imaging for use in disease discovery and drug development (February 2016). University Spin Out

  6. KMLabseXtreme Ultraviolet Ultrafast Source (XUUS4) named as SPIE Prism Award Finalist in Scientific Laser Category. XUUS4 enables ultrafast amplifier users to convert IR output to the Extreme UV (EUV) or Soft X-Ray region. Applications include EUV lithographic metrology, lensless imaging, and high spatial/ temporal resolution pump-probe experiments. (2016) University Spin-Out • Research Electro-Optics was named a finalist in the Penton’s Aviation Week Program Excellence Awards under the Sub-System Production category for the Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod Vacuum Cell Assembly program (November 2015). • Sporian Microsystemscited as a member of the Vehicle Integrated Propulsion Research (VIPR) team that received a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Group Achievement Award (August 2016).

  7. Primary Function of Colorado Photonics Companies Examples of Primary Functions Manufacturing (NAICS 31-33) • Displays • Lasers • Lens • Measuring devices • Medical devices • Sensors Wholesale Trade (NAICS 42) • Wholesalers of many products • Additional services: consulting, product development, or prototyping. Professional, Scientific, Technical Services (NAICS 54) • Research • Consulting

  8. Company size and employment opportunity • 251 companies employ 8,069 • 214 companies, or 85.3% or the total, employ fewer than 50. • 2,612 employees, or 32.4% of the total, work at companies with fewer than 50 employees. • Between 3,109 and 3,964 employees must have a basic knowledge of photonics.

  9. Photonics in Multinational Companies with a Presence in Colorado These 26 companies employ approximately 34,000 workers in Colorado. Based on previous research, it is estimated that between 1,000 and 1,700 of those workers require knowledge of photonics.

  10. Number of Companies by City The 243 photonics companies are located in 41 towns and cities. Percent by Top Cities Boulder 23.5% Colorado Spring 11.9% Longmont 10.3% Fort Collins 9.1% Other 37 cities 45.3%

  11. Six Things to Remember ENABLING Colorado photonics companies provide products and services that make the aerospace, biosciences, energy, computing, communications, and other industries successful. • There are 243 photonics companies in Colorado with fewer than 250 employees. • 243 BOULDER 23.5% of the small companies are located in the city of Boulder ; 44.9% of the small companies are located in Boulder County. • There are at least 4,109 employees in the cluster who must have basic knowledge of photonics. • 4,109 • MANUFACTURING • The primary function of 53.5% of the total companies is manufacturing. • There are at 8,069 employees who work at companies that have fewer than 500 employees. • 8,069

  12. Methodology for Identifying and Verifying Companies The Colorado Photonics Cluster Methodology • Previous directory • SBIR/STTR grants • Secretary of State new company records • Job Postings • Search in various commercial databases • Search of other cluster databases • Companies identified through the Advanced Industries Program (OEDIT) • Companies identified by members • General database searches • What about you? Finger pointing to them? http://www.coloradophotonics.org/
