  2. 5 Quick marketing tips for the busy freelancer • Giving up on marketing when you’re too busy is on the top of freelancing mistakes. It is easy to forget all that work you used to put in when it was quieter and you had a lot of spare time. If you become inactive for a longer period of time, you’ll end up having to build your marketing presence back up from zero. Everybody knows the feeling – no new emails popping up, the phones are quiet and your desk is empty. How do you prevent that? • Never stop marketing, even at your busiest times. It is absolutely fine to cut down on your efforts, there are only so many hours in a week after all. But nobody says you have to spend 4 hours a day on your marketing. Following our five tips for the busy freelancer, you can keep your marketing alive in as little as an hour a day.

  4. 1) Share on social networks • You’re busy working on three different projects with approaching deadlines? Potential clients visiting your social media presence don’t know that. If they see no content, they will assume that you’re inactive, taking a break or maybe even quit altogether. Show them you’re still alive – you don’t have to create your own content to do that. Share an article on an interesting development in your field or something that excites or motivates you. Since you probably spend some time in the day reading up on stuff like that, all it takes is pressing that share button.

  5. 2) Keep your blog up, even with little content • Similarly to your social network presence, no recent content on your blog equals unavailability to any potential client. Again, it doesn’t have to be 2 pages of text that you wrote for four hours. Sometimes a picture can speak much louder than words. Give them a sneak peak on something you’re working on or show off your home office or your cluttered busy desktop. These simple interactions show anyone who visits your blog that you’re hard at work, and therefore, a desirable hire.

  6. 3) Respond to emails within a day • Responding to emails right away can be crucial – the early bird catches the worm. Imagine that a potential client sends a job offer to three different freelancers. Two of them respond in four days, the third says right away that he or she is busy, but is up for it. Which one is most likely to get the job? • It’s much easier for the client to establish a timeline and start arranging for the project with someone who actually acknowledged their offer than waiting on the two freelancers who might never answer the email. So even if you’re busy, write people back and let them know when you are available. Recommending a colleague can be beneficial for you as well, assuming the client is happy with the work they end up doing.

  7. 4) Keep in touch with old clients • Speaking of communicating with clients, keeping in touch is a big part of marketing. And since we’re talking about the busy freelancer, you probably can’t afford to spend a whole day talking to people you used to work with. Make a schedule – call up or write one former client each week. Ask them how their business is going, inquire about how they liked your work and let them know you’re up for further collaboration in the future. Finished the list? Start from the beginning – this step will take you 30 minutes a week and guarantees that all your old clients remember you.

  8. 5) Meet people in your breaks • Last but not least, don’t neglect the personal touch. Talking about your business and what you do can lead to unexpected results.
